Yeah, but MPs are elected on the basis that they are supposed to be smart!

hckošice 13,326 Posted September 30, 2023 #9824 Share Posted September 30, 2023 Parliamentary Elections today in Battle between populistic two-times former PM Robert Fico party Smer-SSD (more nationalisticly oriented than its "official" label as central-left social-democracy should make people thing, in fact it is now quite openly a more pro-"eastern" oriented party committed to ending Slovakia´s especially military support for Ukraine) and the pro-European openly liberal (PS - Progresívne Slovensko) Progressive Slovakia party, very popular especially among the younger and urban population (their party leader, who is European Parliament vice-president Michal Šimečka voting with his wife and their daughter this morning in the pic) The polls anyway did not expect any of them to be able to form a majority in the parliament and the elections should end by a stalemate. The major threat however is if Fico will accept to take the far-right Republika movement... which is rising quite dangerously lately...into their coalition, this will be a disaster for the country, they openly claim attention to leave Nato, EU and their leadres are even convicted nazis, admiring the world war II slovak nazi puppet state president etc... you know the story... so hopefully nothing like this will happen 25 parties entered the elections, To make the parliament a party need 5 %, a coalition of 2 parties 7 % Elections started at 07:00 and should end at 22:00 Wikipedia about the elections

hckošice 13,326 Posted September 30, 2023 #9826 Share Posted September 30, 2023 News informing about unusual large participation. From the 6021 polling stations in the country some are really unique and atypical In this village of 11 eligible voters 2nd smallest of the country, we have also a village with 7 inhabitants btw... they had to place a polling station in the house of one of the residents. right in the middle of the living room, with half of the village inhabitants being the local election commission ... oh man, I love this country in some other villages the polling stations are also in some pizzerias or pubs Spoiler ňň Quite special are also the habits of some older people to vote in traditionals outfits like in this one near the Hungarian borders Spoiler Important part can be played also from outside as around cca 60000 Slovaks voted from abroad this time by mail, our compatriots living abroad send their votes from all over the world even from countries like Bahrein, Algeria or even Afghanistan intoronto and mrv86 1

Olympian1010 7,554 Posted October 1, 2023 #9830 Share Posted October 1, 2023 (edited) Progressive Slovakia way off those numbers according to Reuters and AP. It’s looking more like another populist victory Quote “Fico also campaigned against immigration and LGBTQ+ rights and threatened to dismiss investigators from the National Criminal Agency and the special prosecutor who deal with corruption and other serious crimes.” Link: https://apnews.com/article/slovakia-parliamentary-election-15902118682938d08c24ff7d0269656a …So Slovakians basically looked at the current GOP (to draw parallels to the US), and thought, “I want that.” How unfortunate.
