[OFF TOPIC] Politics Thread

@heywooduPolish is actually the language with the biggest usage of letter "Z" in the world (mainly thanks to our fancy digraphs "cz", "sz" and "rz" :p). "Z" also means "with" or "from" so it's a common preposition too.

Second most popular language using "z" is probably Hungarian.

Yeah, whenever writing something about Polish athletes, I'm always afraid. At least Kamil Stoch or Dawid Kubacki aren't a problem :d

We have elections in the UK, this Thursday, so if you are a politics nut like me, I thought I would give a little rundown of what to look out for.

Blackpool South By-Election

Called after the conservative MP was caught being bribed, the seat will most likely be taken by labour. The reform result will be interesting (if it is high that is bad news for the Tories, as vote splitting of the right could hand a lot of seats of Labour at the general election.

Local council elections

These elections are only in England, and in 107/153 total councils, with the majority electing just 1/3 of the councillors. These elections were last held in 2021 when the conservatives were having a "vaccine boost", so we could see some large swings in some areas.

Although local issues play a part, the general voting trends will likely show how each party is performing. Keep an eye out for the projected national share of votes, which shows how the country would have voted if this was a general election.

The conservatives and labour are both defending around 900 seats each, with the Liberal democrats on 405 and Greens on 118. The conservatives are expected to lose around 400 and all the other parties to make gains. In terms of actual councils Labour are defending 45, the Conservatives 18 and the Lib Dems 10.

The councils to keep an eye on are

- Adur (CON loss)

- Bolton (LAB gain)

- Brentwood (LDM gain)

- Bristol (GREEN gain)

- Cannock Chase (LAB gain)

- Dorset (CON loss / LDM gain)

- Dudley (CON loss)

- Gloucester (CON loss)

- Hartlepool (LAB gain)

- Hyndburn (LAB gain)

- Milton Keynes (CON loss)

- Portsmouth (LDM gain)

- Redditch (CON loss)

- Rushmore (CON loss)

- Solihull (CON loss)

- Tunbridge Wells (LDM gain)

- Wokingham (LDM gain)

London Assembly election

Labour will look to take control of the London Assembly, they need to gain 2 seats to have a majority, but it is certainly not a formality.

Mayors

11 regional mayors will be elected with labour defending 6, conservatives 2 and 3 being new positions. Realistically labour could sweep all 11 but Tees Valley will be on a knife edge (47% each on Opinion polls)

Police and Crime Commissioners

The conservatives are defending 30 seats, labour 8 and Plaid Cymru 1. These elections will now be first past the post compared to supplementary vote which could mean the anti tory vote is split. You would expect labour gains but the scale is quite unknown

Overall these elections are a litmus test for the parties, but I wouldn't expect many political shockwaves from them, and the bigger vote will likely be held later in the year.

The senile old fool Joe Biden has called Japan & India xenophobic. He is truly losing it big time. So who's he gonna offend next before they switch his mic off? :mumble:

The border wall with Mexico has only grown bigger during Biden's tenure so yeah, just because CNN is sucking on Democrats' kneecaps it doesn't make him even less of a hypocrite.

Do you think he’s wrong? Japan and India are pretty plainly fairly xenophobic countries (at least by American standards).

This has big “a gaffe is when a politician tells the truth” energy. It isn’t PC, but it’s true.

We do talk about a guy who fist bumped Saudi Arabia crown prince after all. I guess Biden can dislike Japan and India but no US President will forget the 1973 oil crisis and its economical consequences.

Saudi Arabia are the good guys, right?

In this perseverance lies our shared strength, our mission to millions of young people for whom sports are a guiding point and a shining star. I believe in our country, in our strong-spirited guys. • I did not think it would happen again but... I created similar post for Paris - 2024 https://totallympics.com/forums/topic/27489-ain-athletes-qualification-for-paris-2024-olympic-games-and-reallocation-of-quotas-post1-updated-1507/#comments  I was not sure if that reallocations would really happen but the reality was even more serious than the expectations. According to this research 43% of the neutral statuses issued by the IFs were fake AIN  - https://razom22.com/neutrality-research/  And the figures are based on the IOC decisions - not on the evaluations by Ukrainian NOC or sport ministry. Right now the situation is absolutely unclear. As usually )) Some notes: 1. Russians will not reject quotas for 2026 as they did for 2024 in judo and wrestling. 2. AINERP may be more loyal to russians due to the new member - Watanabe. His federation issued AIN status to Melnikova who took part in the primaries of the russian ruling party, had phots with Z and e .t.c. 3. I do not expect a lot of reallocations becaues of the total small number of the rus/blr athletes in qualification events right now. 4. BUT, even with these small numbers we see that FIS allowed to compete several incompliant persons.        Short notes from the IOC statement before Paris - 2024:   1. IOC`s decisions to reject quotas are final. 2. IOC`s decisions to approve quotas are not final - new facts may lead to the rejection of invitation. 3. IOC`s decisions cannot be appealed - NOCs were not invited to the Games, so it is a good will to invite individual athletes... or not   russians Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Adeliia PETROSIAN Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC Figure skating Petr GUMENNIK Men's singles Davide Lewton Brain Confirmed by IOC belorussians     Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Viktoriya SAFONOVA Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC
    • I would say they will not be eligible. But it realy abotut the wording every federation has in its papers. World Aquatics changes their policies several times (especially after Mazepin "solved the issues" persoanlly - as witnessed one russian Olympic champion)   Inoirtnat notes on FIS decisions:   FIS points are frozen for ruissns and belorussians - so the situation is not so complicated for a lot of them. The list of the AIN`s is not final as the list from ISU was. It means that persons mau be not only removed from the list but added as well. I expect russians to try some freestyle applications before the stage in China, for example. FIS has not problems with the deny of visa or entris by the host countries. So they kept the possibility to close the doors for the russians for all the countries as ICF did. No sanctions for this, no removing events from the Olympic qualification list, no host changes,   * * * * * Here is the the relevant extract from FIS papers for Aerials tram event. What do you think?
