We know Hollywood doesn't tell the truth and it's only a dramatised version of events. If US people treat Hollywood movies like the "ultimate and only truth" then it's a bigger problem and has little to do with the subject itself. Ted Bundy & Charles Manson are on the rise again and I wonder how many people thought about watching the Tarantino movie and the Zac Efron role that these guys maybe weren't that bad after all. Hollywood & US media in general have a long history of glorifying crime & murder so I don't expect censoring Gone with the Wind will have any significant impact on how the slavery is viewed IMO.

Adding a prompt to the description of the movie, or right before it begins, that begins a discussion about the greater historical context of movie doesn’t seem like a bad thing to me. It certainly isn’t censorship. We have put off serious discussions about these topics for generations, and you can see it has affected people.

It's not HBO's responsibility to teach history though. We know USA tries to buy themselves a clear consciousness but some one-off description before a single movie ain't gonna do the trick nationwide IMO. Even George Washington was a slave owner and I don't think his statues are going down anytime soon. USA isn't progressive enough for that to happen :p

Actually it is. If you’re going to make a movie with a false depiction of the time period available, then you should provide a lesson in the greater history of the time period.

Hasn't Disney just put a disclaimer?

That’s censorship and rewriting history! We should march into the streets and demand justice. How dare they try to inform us! ?

Honesty, people are way too upset over this. How about you get upset about the institutional racism that led us here in the first place.

It's a by-product of progressive or liberal people being offended by just about anything in return. We live in the entitlement era after all. I tell you, if this was some LGBT show taken down, social media would be burning with anger right now and HBO would be forced to apologize in public. Sweeping Gone with the Wind under the carpet like it's no censorship doesn't hold much ground.

It’s always interesting the see issues which @heywoodu takes a stand on. So far it’s the destruction of a few statues made for bad people, and the destruction of businesses that have profited off marginalized communities.

I don't think there's much need to copy-paste everyone else's "There's racism and that's bad" and just turn it into a discussion with nothing but "Yes, I agree" posts.

But sure, if that's what you take away from my posts (including those where I'm more than once saying how the peaceful protests are absolutely justified, how psychos like Chauvin need to be dealth with, and so on), go ahead :) I mean, it's not true, but feel free to think so. We don't have enough "You don't completely agree with everything I say, so you are completely against everything I stand for" talk on internet yet these days.

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Delete. This post didn’t accomplish anything outside of partisanship and simple insults (referring to my original post).

I agree that people should absolutely be looked at from all angles. However, I also understand that we shouldn’t honor people who traded slaves, or killed natives, or fought to keep people enslaved.

Which is why I almost literally said statues of people who did nothing but be involved in stuff like slave trading only have a place in a museum, where people actively go to learn about history and stuff - people really aren't going to a museum to 'honor' someone.

    • good luck!   they're late by days (when they post something)...   many of the results I already posted are not available yet, there
    • I think that is probably the best that could have happened to her in the long term. If she won the bronze, it would have been one more of the 41 medals.   Now her case has made it to the main page of Spanish press and she gained way more recognition and will keep the same allowance as if she won the medal.
    • Why are these events so confusing?     Like, there's three events and judging by the names alone, women are allowed to play in all three of them? Seems like it should be the way luge did it: the doubles was an open event until very recently. Then the women's doubles were added and, logically, the open event became the men's event.\   Seems like there is only a few random matches available to watch by the way https://www.youtube.com/@ultiworld/streams

    • I'm getting mad!   I thought than here in Italy we had a chance to follow all the events properly, but that's not the case    Italian specialized websites only publish the results of the events where we get at least a medal, WS is late by days in their result section, all the disciplines have some kind of coverage, but some of them are basically amateur pictures, taking with a cell phone (inline slalom, for instance)   I'm very disappointed by the organization and also by the lack of interest in the Italian media...I mean, this is a global event, 15-day long and with many different disciplines....not only, it's one of our best chances to shine in the world of sport (we're basically guaranteed to dominate the medal table, grabbing medals left and right)    but world skate looks to be only interested in the Olympic skateboarding events, which also have a lot of coverage on the Olympic Channel website   personally, instead, i'm only interested in Inline Speedskating and men's Rink Hockey
    • naaa...that's not sailing, you just can't do it when the waves are high...   however, the weather prediction isn't that good for the next weekend, so you might get even more than what you're asking for
