He won silver medals at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and was Greece's flag bearer for the opening ceremony at London 2012. Although he was short in height, was nicknamed "Stefan the Great", as both a player and a coach he was one of the main leader of the greatest successes of Romanian ice hockey in the 1960s until the beginning of the 1980s. In 1964 and 1968 he represented Romania at the Winter Olympic Games. After a successful playing career, he coached the national team bench. Romania´s most memorable result under his lead is the 5:4 victory over the USA in the 1977 World Champs relegation group. The article suggests the stress of Valieva case might have been a factor.
