Big Z announced his retirement :(

885754.jpeg

45 years old :SVK hockey legend Zdeno Chára announced today he will sign a 1 day contract with his beloved Boston Bruins and then retire.

The native of Trenčín has played the highest number of games among defensemen over his 25 years in the NHL (1680). His greatest achievements include winning the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011 and the Norris Trophy for the best NHL defenseman in 2009.

His biggest success with Slovakia was the WCH Silver medal he won twice (2000 and 2012).

He is 3 times Olympian, played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. In Sochi he was the Opening Ceremony flag bearer.

Deividas Margevičius :LTU - Butterfly swimmer, has retired today.

He's the 100m and 200m butterfly national record holder and he qualified twice to the Olympics with the Lithuanian 4x100m Medley relay.

With this, Lithuania no longer has a dedicated butterfly specialist, so full focus will probably be on qualifying a freestyle relay, since no juniors or youth athletes are prioritising butterfly either.

Also another big name in Hockey, Sochi 2014 gold medalist PK Subban also announced his retirement

and a third great veteran defenseman, "Iron ManKeith Yandle, also called it a career officially (even if he already said he wouldn't return at the end of last season)...

wow! 3 big names lost in 24 hours...not the best day in history for the NHL...

p.s @hckošice will "Big Zee" be the next President of the Slovak Republic, now that he's free from hockey duties?

British Taekwando Medallist Lutallo Muhammed.  Bronze in London, Silver in Rio.  Came within literally one second of gold in Rio, but conceded a buzzer-beating head shot when all he needed to do was take one step backwards out of the ring and give away the penalty point.

:GRE Sofia Ifadidou (heptathlon) - She competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. In London she set the Olympic heptathlon javelin record. She will compete next month in the Athens marathon. Interesting choice for her last competition although it is symbolic.

After that she will compete in December in a small road race in her hometown of Veria.

#4 on my list of 32 top moments of the Rio Olympics, if I remember correctly, I was positively burning with excitement when that happened :d

Nothing against Muhammed, obviously, but from a neutral perspective it was just so awesome, plus from a less neutral perspective it was amazing to see Ivory Coast get a historic gold this way.
