It was a much simpler time.

Photos? Who wants photos?

Like smoking cigs was still common. I believe only Kimi Raikkonen is a smoker from current drivers and then Fernando Alonso from what I know.

Alfonso de Portago. You won't see a cigarette this close to a fuel tank in 2020!

Jose Froilan Gonzalez (left) would probably have a very hard time fitting in a modern F1 cockpit too!

Yeah, fun to look back at but luckily things are different now indeed. People who are supposed to be role models (whether they want it or not) smoking away, not a damn thing in terms of safety and so on.

Technically speaking they probably compete under Palestine flag. It's not much about Israel as place where they live but the Israeli flag that will never be shown at these Games ;)

due to the fact that Israel is not recognized by most of those countries the Israeli arabs athleats can not participate in the, if they decide to go under the palestinian flag they will represent the palestinian authority therefore train for them it's mean less money and facilities... and besides good portion of them is very patriotic so for them it's not even a concidiration

Cigarette companies were the major sponsors of motor sport in those days.  Remember the Lotus black & gold John Player Special team & the 555 blue & yellow Rally Team.

All many times World Champions.

Yep, not a bad thing they aren't around anymore. Even though the JPS colors were beautiful and I even have a drinking cup in those colors, a combination of Coritinthians (football) and Ayrton Senna, present from my dad in law :d

Cigs and alcohol were one thing, there was also Penthouse & Durex sponsoring F1 back in the day:

Guy Edwards & model Suzanne Turner at the Hesketh car launch in 1976.

By the way, in the 80's and 90's there was a Dutch amateur cycling team sponsored by a sex club, Sauna Diana. They got sort of famous for their bus which appeared in the Tour de France, and the team competed among other things in the Trump Tour. Yes, that's the Trump :p

Famous story here, but apart from 'hey a team sponsored by a sex club', it did actually have influence: in that time, even pro riders had nothing more than a wet towel to clean themselves up a little in their team manager's car after a race, but thanks to Sauna Diana, the normal thing quickly became for teams to have a full-blown bus with more and more luxuries on board - going from simply some private space, to showers, massages, beds etc and the semi-hotels we know now.

Back to women's 400 m hurdles final at 1999 Athletics WCH in Seville where both Nezha Bidouane and Daimi Pernia thought that they won it all but the winner was decided by. 01 second

    • I used to think Johnston(e) - from some place John build (aka stone for building something hehe).   I'm not familiar if Scottish or Irish clans are named after such clan founder or a place?
    • i'm triggered,legitimately thought kennedy 2.0 happened,just way more out of nowhere
    • Perfectly obvious.    Johnson = son of John Johnston or Johnstone = From St John's Town ie Perth in Scotland.
    • Nope. Azu missed out by 0.01. Bromell lost silver by 0.001!
    • Double silver and no medal for Bromell?
