Oh wait, he did play for Olympiacos actually

I didn't even remember that. Probably because the format was different this year due to covid and we had some bad results so I wasn't fully paying attention like I normally do

In addition to Hungary, whose roster was mentioned some days ago, Italy, Australia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and USA have also announced their rosters for the olympics.

For Serbia, 15 players will travel to Japan with two of them going for the last training camp and serving as reserves, if needed.

Montenegro's best and most experienced goalkeeper Dejan Lazovic is recovering from surgery and won't play.

  • 2 weeks later...

A little away from topic. I read South Africa and Australia qualified by "continental selection". Why not the winners of African Championships and Oceania Championships?

because only 1 country was interested in those two continents.

There was no African or Oceania Championships. Basically, FINA asked if anyone was interested and only South Africa and Australia said yes.

There are 55 countries in Africa, even a 16-team tournament can be held with qualifying. I understand water polo is not very popular, but I imagine there are more than 10 players in every country who can play this sport. Not on world class level of course, but if you can swim and throw a ball, you can already be a member of the national team.

There are 12 countries and some more territories in Oceania. On those island contries, literally everyone can swim and throw a ball. So not on world class level, but they are able to form a team

The thing is, even if you have a team traveling requires money. Most of these countries have very limited funding for sport and even some that have it may think it's just not worth the spending.

Yeah, I imagine other African/Oceania nations have teams, but funding for a niche team sport is probably non-existent. Even for South Africa there was talk about them withdrawing due to lack of funds.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
    • Today : Jordan 3-0 Egypt  This team will surprise us
    • option no.2 for sure, as it's been all this shitstorm organized by the nhl owners through their embedded reporters   ps not that the north american audience looks really aware of the hockey rules and habits outside the nhl (and around their game, too, since they look not to know that just a couple of weeks ago they played 2 nhl matches on an ice sheet of the exact same size of Milan's olympic arena)
    • Are we supposed to take Daly's word for it or is this just public posturing to try and shame the Milan organizers (which they certainly deserve for all the delays) in order to threaten NHL participation?
    • Well that was a disappointing opening ceremony. Not to mention the boss is late too...   Anyway this is another victim of bureaucracy, the initial creative director quit in October and we get this kind of show.   Original plan: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/17EVayTpig/
    • Japan missed their last shot with hammer in the 10th last night against the Philippines for them to stay alive.  USA's remaining 2 games are against Philippines and Netherlands, so they have a tough road ahead, although they've already beaten Japan, so that helps for tiebreaker purposes.
    • They have already beaten Japan, so a win would them in a strong place.
