I swear IOC is trying so hard to make Olympics look bad.

And succeeding (at least for me)...

I think its actually the FIS.

Also earlier it was reported that the FIS wanted a 2 run downhill.

Which means the Super G will be under threat too (if the FIS makes this a 2 run event as well).

THis is being done to "increase television viewers"

It also increases the ability for places without high enough mountains to host too... which is a problem for the IOC right now.

A two run downhill, for fuck's sake people

Did you hear this personally btw, or is there some link where I can read this so I can use it as a source on a Dutch page? :p

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Thanks. I kinda hope there will never be a link to post here about it...

I believe it's almost certain that the alpine combined will be replaced by a parallel event. This is from last May and you can read the draft calendar for 2020-21 (PDF), updated in October.

A women's 2 run downhill is already scheduled in February 2018, and more are supposed to be held in 2020-21 according to that draft.

That is so sad. After speed skating, the next winter sport is slowly being torn down. And biathlon is up next, considering there's another new 'SuperSprint' event later this season.

  • 2 weeks later...

Travis Ganong's fall in Bormio turns out to have torn his ACL, he's out for the season (and so the Olympics) :(

Good news, the combined is a snoozefest most of the time and often very unfair for speed specialists, especially on the mens side. I think Shiffrin would have dominated this event anyway, there is no need to gift her another gold.

Of course heywoodu is right about speed skating, i dont get what those officials are thinking. Is there any person that will suddenly say "So far i never cared about speed skating, but now that they introduced the mass start i became a huge fan"? They should just accept that some sports are boring and will never have as many fans as the popular sports like ice hockey or biathlon, so they should just try to keep those people happy, who already follow their sport.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

    • no idea. I just repeated what I read  but I won't be surprised if they make a mistake like this. the officials here are usually terrible in reading the rules. if I remember correctly they sent an Ice hockey team to the Games back in 2017 but most of the players were ineligible to play per IIHF rules and they played some friendlies instead    btw there is a federation, but not an ISU member. Ice Skating (which has a very very limited activity here) was a part of Skating (roller sports) federation but now moved to Skiing federation which officially changed its name to Skiing and Winter Sports Federation.
