According to multiple unofficial resources, Kyle Anderson will go to China as neutralized player in around 10 days after dealing with his eye injury. He will play World Cup and hopefully OG for China once the neutralization process finishes.

Disappointing. A country of 1.4 billion should be capable of developing their own talents...

Greece naturalized Thomas Walkup last week. It's been a pretty big and controversial story here, that a basketball player who has only been here for two years got citizenship.

We haven't had any of these sports naturalizations in about 20 years (unlike most of our neighbouring countries who do it religiously for example), and now in the past month we got a Russian wrestler and an American basketball player. I'm not sure what we are trying to achieve here. I was always proud that we only had athletes who had connections to our country (even if they were immigrants from a young age or had a Greek parent or grandparent), and now we can no longer say this...

Meanwhile Olympic gold medalist Helen Maroulis, who comes from a Greek family and has a grandmother that still lives in Greece, could not get citizenship in time for Rio 2016 :facepalm:but for some American basketball player of Olympiacos, everything gets fast tracked...

Anyways, we still don't know if Walkup will be able to play for the national team, as teams are only allowed to have one naturalized player under FIBA rules. Despite his Greek mother, Dorsey is considered naturalized because apparently they rushed the paperwork back in 2015 when he became a Greek citizen. I was reading that if they get the proper paperwork, he will be considered "not naturalized" due to his Greek origins and then both him and Walkup will be able to play. I'm not sure how possible this is but it's quite interesting.

yeah...now in Italy it's time for the Banchero affair... :coffee:

it's 2 years that's a circus, but now we're reaching points still untouched...by most part of our (uneducated) press and by the usual bandawagoners (pretend to be basketball fans).

I just don't want to imagine what's gonna be like in our media and social media if he finally decides not to play for :ITA after all the promises of the past 2 years or so (and I'm pretty sure he's not coming to :ITA, especially now that he got the ROY award in the NBA and possibly increased his chances to be called also by the US team).

Everything is possible in FIBA. This rule is made for small basketball nations, when big basketball countries do it, it's really a shame.

I don't think anyone should do it, but I always especially hated when a lot of the Balkan/ex-Yugo countries would get American basketball players who never even stepped foot in those countries prior to getting citizenship (I remember :MKD had about 5 players like this, also I remember some from :MNE and :BIH, and I'm sure there are many others).

At least in Walkup's case he has lived in Greece since he plays for Olympiacos since 2021, and he is apparently learning the language and says he plans to live in Greece for the rest of his life, though that might be fake. Still I do not think he belongs on our national team, but at least there is some connection to the country.

Regardless I think it's even worse when Spain, the most successful national team in Europe the last 20 years, who has the best league in Europe, can't even naturalize from their own league and needs to find Lorenzo Brown who never even played in the Spanish league. (and for the Spanish users who tried to bring up Dorsey playing for Greece when I said this about Lorenzo Brown during Eurobasket, I will say again that Dorsey has a Greek mother and he played briefly in the Greek league and had Greek citizenship since he was a teenager, it's a very different situation from Lorenzo Brown who has absolutely zero connection to Spain)

I think Lithuania is the only big European basketball country that does not have any naturalized players? Serbia doesn't either, but they have had several on their women's team (and also in wrestling). Also Greece never did until literally two weeks ago (I am not including real immigrants who lived in the country for many years and waited for the citizenship process or people with Greek ancestry).

Also I am not sure about France, Germany, Italy but for sure they do in other sports.

Meanwhile in Indonesia we just recently stopped to naturalize people without a proper rule. After taking 3 Americans and 2 Senegalese (the two boys are not even 17 years old) with no connection to this country whatsoever, our federation finally decided to find people with Indonesian descent who are playing in other Asian countries.

What makes me amazed was the fact the 3 Americans ditched their US citizenship for an extremely useless passport (no dual citizenship here) if they are still planning to play in abroad, that's some incredible persuasive skill by the Indonesian association lol

FIBA World Cup Final Stage to be moved to the Mall Of Asia Arena

Mall of Asia Arena is the new host of the final stage of the 2023 FIBA World Cup to be held in Manila in September, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced Friday.

You can’t blame FIBA for moving the venue. During some of the recent concerts staged there, it took hours for the fans to exit the parking area.

    • For Ghiotto to win 2 golds at the Olympics, he would have to be the second van der Poel or Sablikova in they pick of form. You have to be a genius to beat this whole coalition of Norwegians, Dutchmen etc. However, I don't see that much talent in him. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm afraid that he'll end up with some silver-bronze in the 10 km and that's it. If he starts losing to Eitrem now, who is 22 years old, it won't bode well for the future, and there's also Roest + maybe another Dutchman will jump out. Generally, our team is poorly prepared for this season and it's not like Ghiotto is on individual training on the moon and has just come down to earth and will now win everything while the rest of the team are in terrible form. Of course, the lack of form of Bosa or Trentini means e.g. 20th place, not 10th, but for Ghiotto it could mean 4/5 place, instead of 1st. It's the same with the team. For today, the only positive performance for us is Lollobrigida's 2nd place in the b category of the women's 1500 meters and Fontana's solid performance in the same event. The rest is terrible.

    • As far as I am concerned, there are two very simple problems: infrastructure and the lack of cooperation between sports federations. Let me explain. The MiCo2026 Olympics will provide virtually no legacy in ice sports, there is still a lack of an indoor hall, there is no federal centre that has been promised for so many years. It could have been an opportunity to make a nice roof in Baselga di Pinè, but instead they preferred to make temporary facilities in Rho.   The second problem is the total lack of cooperation between roller skating and speed skating, we have a huge pool and we are not exploiting it. Fortunately we are doing a few small collegiate events, the technical collaboration with the Netherlands absolutely must be exploited.   I am not so negative however about the current situation, Ghiotto practically on the 10k seems to be off the scale (watch out for the Czech and Norwegian) and he can medal in the 5k and drag the pursuit team. In the mass start you have more cards in both the men's and women's, let's see what Fontana does. And a Fontana-Peveri-Lollobrigida pursuit team can also play for a third place
    • Canada Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (13) - That's been the team size the last couple of Olympics so it's a safe bet again. Cross Country Skiing  (10) - Not too familiar with the qualification system. Probably around 6 men and 4 women. Ski Jumping  (5) - Loutitt, Strate and Maurer for sure on the women's side. Possibly a 4th will qualify. On the men's side, if Bowd-Clowes returns, then he should also qualify. Nordic Combined  (0) - Been a nonexistent sport for a while. No athletes competing in the World Cup or Continental Cup. Freestyle Skiing  (32) - Should qualify a team in mixed aerials which means a maximum team size of 32 athletes. Which athletes in which disciplines to be determined. Snowboarding  (24) - Full teams in slopestyle and big air. Then somewhere between 1-4 athletes in the other disciplines. Biathlon  (6) - Based on the Nations Cup last year, the men finished outside the top 20 and wouldn't qualify a relay team (and that's without Russia and Belarus). With Christian Gow's retirement, that makes things even more difficult. Women's relay should still qualify though. Ski Mountaineering  (1) - Gonna be optimistic here and say that one athlete will qualify either through the World Rankings or continental quota.     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (16) - 7 to 8 men, 8 to 9 women. For now, I'll say 8 of each gender. Short Track Speed Skating  (10) - Full team size. With the current skill level of the team, anything else would be a tragedy. Figure Skating  (12) - Most likely 1 man (I hope) and 1 woman, then 2-3 pairs and 2-3 ice dance couples. For now, let's say 2 in pairs and 3 in ice dance.     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (7) - 2 women + 1 entry in each of the other disciplines Skeleton  (4) - 1 or 2 men + 2 or 3 women Bobsleigh  (14) - 2 men's crews (in both events) and 3 women's crews (in both events)     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Full team or else you might as well burn the federation to the ground. Ice Hockey  (48) - Both men's and women's teams already qualified       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (229) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (184)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (214)
    • Besides, I think Eitrem will be better than Ghiotto. You can see it after 1500 meters. He is younger. The whole Norwegian team is also in great shape. You just have to look at the team Norway has, how many new and young skaters there are and in our group A there is one Trentini, who takes last place. In every winter sport we invest too little money to be counted.   If Eitrem has the same form over long distances as he does over 1500 metres, he will dominate this season, not Ghiotto or Roest.
    • Looking at last season's 1st World Cup, it's worse for now and it should be the other way around. Bosa out of shape, Trentini weak. Both will drop to a lower group. It's similar to skeleton, i.e. regression instead of progress. I hope this doesn't mean Ghiotto is also in weaker form, because it could end up with 0 podiums this weekend.
    • In general, our picture for a little over 1 year until the home games looks like this:     - the women's sector is still based on one Lollo, who is 3 years older than 2022, - the women's and men's sprint sector is based on one Bosa and possibly the young Pergher (0% possobility for medal in 2026), - Ghiotto has made a lot of progress and that is a big plus. He could result to give our even 3 medals, including 1/2 gold. Our team's performance also depends to a large extent on Ghiotto's form, - the rest of the men's team is basically unchanged. There is Giovannoni in the mass start, there is Malfatti in the longer distances, but they are not competitors on the podium of a major event.   I will repeat myself: if Ghiotto continues to make such progress, we will probably win 3 medals, 2 of which gold and it will be a success. If something doesn`t work out, an injury, illness, etc. (we know from Vitozzi that this can happen to anyone), then it could be very bad. By the way, this also applies to other sports: the above-mentioned Vitozzi in biathlon, Goggia in downhill, Brignone in giant slalom, etc.
    • With the World Cup season in most of the winter sports about to begin and qualification in some sports already underway, I think it's about time for this thread.    Template    ...
