Problem with including natural track is that they are asking for potentially four extra medals,  which I don’t see the IOC accepting at all.  It’s the equivalent of a whole new sport.

I don’t know, it does require a good amount of quotas. However, Italy is very good in the discipline, so they will campaign hard to add it to the program. They are supposed to be allowed, as the host, to add events/sports that are popular, or that the host country wishes to help grew, within their nation.

Just adding to my earlier thoughts after reading that N.Y. Times article about brain injuries in sliding sports...

It may be worth thinking about replacing artificial track luge with natural track luge. There’s many advantages to the switch. The venue and track building costs would likely by much lower for organizers. I think/believe natural track luge is much safer for athletes, than artificial track luge. I think more countries could become involved in natural track luge because than artificial luge. Luge would maintain the current number of events/medals it has at the Olympic Games.

It wasn't a problem when in Sochi we get four new competitions on both Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing. Winter Games are not so big as summer edition and IOC seems to not affraid of adding new competitions at big scale. This is one of the reasons that there is smaller and smaller number of candidates for host every four years.

I disagree. There are more countries competing on artificials. The track had to be build unless you get rid off bobsleigh and skeleton too. And of course there is something called tradition ;)

Italy is a powerhouse of natural track luge. I think that the inclusion chances are around 75/80.

Same discussion about ski mountaineering

You might be right.  Perhaps the Olympics will have to move to a model other Multination, Multi-Sport events have where you have a fixed core group of events that appear in every Games, then a flexible fringe group that appear at different hosts depending on facilities, local popularity etc.

Women’s doubles seems pretty inevitable. Natural track less so, but if it ever gets included it will be now.

Yes. If we've learned one thing by now, it's that events don't need to have a decent level of competition and a proven regular series of top-level events before being included in the Olympics. Sadly. Like women's Nordic combined it should eventually be added, but not yet.

Just because we strayed onto this topic a little, here’s a fascinating map put together by Google based on YouTube streaming trends the year leading up to Pyeongchang 2018.

I knew there'd be street parties watching speed skating in the back alleys of Accra and Nairobi. Also, Namibia is clearly not letting go of it's German heritage

And a whole host of disadvantages. It's basically like replacing track cycling with cyclo-cross. I mean, it's both done on two wheels and you wouldn't need a cycling track anymore, so what's the problem? Every country can get some mud together.

Seriously thinking about replacing artificial track with natural track luge makes one wonder if people in favor of that actually ever watch said sports, because in that case one would realize it's just two totally different sports.
