not so fast, man!

according to the main Italian expert, the 2026 combined event in Alpine Skiing will still be the "classic" DH (or SG, the jury is still out) + SL individual event

any possible format change will only be applied from the 2030 on

Was this reversed?

yes

as you can read in the document, the AC was only a proposal subject to change (FIS wanted more time to finalize the actual format) and according to Max Ambesi the new format was rejected (especially by the FIS Athletes' Commission) and the return to the old format was suggested

there's not official announcement yet, but if Ambesi says something, you can bet he knows what's behind the curtain ;)

no, I think until after Paris we won't see any detail about the 2026 schedule, my guess it's for the early 2025 (the first release)

Yuuuuuuup. Same deal with the Nordic Combined team event, it's not a team sprint.

The alpine combined event is also now a team event.

I just realized that. It is SUPER bad news.

Four people were a TEAM and it felt like one when they competed. Now that we are going to only have two people it is not a team event, it is just two people. Like kayak doubles or double sculls in rowing.

I personally wonder why you could not have both? There is enough time in the schedule. Still you are going to have enough qualified athletes to have at least eight teams in the competition. In fencing they only allow eight teams and everybody is happy. No idea why they cut the real team event :( Is it at least possible for a NOC to include two two-person teams in the event? Kayaks have allowed it in Paris to have more than one K2 boat in the competition...

Btw the cross-country relay event still consists of 4 athletes, so FIS is not even internally consistent...

Both :ASA and :VAN have American halfpipe skiers aiming to qualify for these games

Lol :VAN Jeanee Crane-Mauzy‘s explanation of what her ties to the country are is genuinely hilarious. She says she wants to compete for Vanuatu to raise awareness for climate change.

I put that up there with Togo's skier who said she felt connected to the country because her dad owned a clothing factory there

I would assume when cutting the team event from 4 to 2 athletes, at least countries can have two teams...otherwise it's going to be an epically empty field of athletes in the Nordic combined especially.

Alpine combined thing is just a shame, instead of it being a full individual event, but yeah, that was unavoidable. Just like the cross-country skiing distances, where in Cortina the men will also do the - for them - ridiculously short 10k interval start and 20k skiathlon. Luckily at least they made the women's mass start 50k instead of shortening the men's to 30k, but still.

Judging by her results she is at least a lot more competitive than Elizabeth Swaney was. I mean, not really competitive for the medals and that's totally fine, but not just someone who literally only shows up to avoid falling and so get the points.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
