Road Cycling 2016 Discussion Thread

A Dutch journalist: "The same champion as last year. Wonderful news, it means we can really just forget this week ever happened without losing a world champion." :d

Agree pretty much, this whole week was like some local stage race that even people living at the finish won't get out of bed for.

Normally i always enjoyed watching the road cycling world championships, but this time i am just glad that its over ...

1) Where were the spectators? I feel sorry for the riders, especially the juniors.

2) Why do we have to host the world championships in the desert at 35°C? I think the next 3 world championships will be much better and i might attend in 2018 or even 2017.

3) Pretty much all the races were boring and decided in a sprint (as expected).

4) Congrats to Sagan, i am glad that Cavendish didnt win, every medal for him is bad for the sport. Belgium has had an amazing year, gold at the olympics and bronze here, compared to 0 top 10 finishes for Germany, with riders like Degenkolb, Kittel or Greipel ...

5) The german head coach must go NOW! How is it even possible to make so many bad decisions and never get a good result if you have 3 of the best sprinters in the world? When i heard that a group of more than 20 riders had a lead of more than 3 minutes, i already expected that no german was in that group ... and sadly i was right. If he would write all possible strategies on a paper and randomly pick one, than the results would be much better ...

This is a complete waste of talent, its the best generation Germany ever had in road cycling.

6) Results in womens time trial (Another american granny, who was banned for doping before, coming out of nowhere to win a gold. This sport got what it deserves, cycling is the perfect sport for americans, i wonder why they arent any better in weightlifting already ... i guess there is not enough money to earn) and mens u23 time trial (the winner got extremely lucky with the conditions and Kämna got robbed the second year in a row) were absolutely disgusting, all the other results were ok.

7) I just found out that some no-name from Denmark won the gold in womens road race! Amazing to hear that she beat all the elite riders! Great results for nordic countries overall! They seem to have a very bright future in cycling, not only in road cycling, but also in (womens) mountainbike and track cycling.

8) This time it wasnt possible for me to watch the live stream on Youtube, which is one of the main reasons why i didnt watch much. Thanks stupid Eurosport! Hopefully they wont broadcast the next couple of years ...

Great analysis! I agree with everything you say (except the "german head coach" one because I don't follow german cycling team :p).

Luckily I think next year's in Bergen will have a much interesting and challenging route :yes

And I also hope for a better result for my national team. I mean, I knew it would be tough because Rui Costa wasn't there, and I know they were just 3 of them, but not even a single one finished the race.... and Nelson Oliveira can do much better than 20º on Time Trial....

As for the Dutch, they performed basically somewhat realistic. Nothing exceptional, nothing horrible. The gold in the women's juniors was nice, the women's elite was a hope for gold but obviously everyone already knew for quite some time that Dideriksen is a hugely talented rider, it was just a matter of time before she'd beat all elite women in a single race. Silver wasn't that bad. We haven't had very promising junior and U23 riders lately so no surprise there, just as it's no surprise at all that Dumoulin didn't perform up to his standards in the time trial. Terpstra did what was expected in the road race (be in a lead group) and Leezer outperformed himself by nearly putting down the stunt of the century as far as world champs road races are concerned.

All in all it we saw at least deserved winners. There's not a lot of doubt that Sagan really is the very best cyclist in the world, Dideriksen has been one of the most talented young women for the past three years or so and this win isn't such a huge surprise, Neben..well, she's good and Martin is without any doubt the best time trialist of the past few years.

Bergen should be cool, because Norway is just beautiful and they've got a ton of good riders :d

Innsbruck should be as cool because of the wonderful scenery that's possible around there, a totally different kind of course and so on. Obviously it shouldn't always be a course with hard climbs, so throwing a flat course like Qatar in there (although the sprint was slightly uphill) every now and then is not a bad idea at all, it's not just climbers and hill specialists who are the best cyclists in the world.

and after cycling Qatar will be host for WC in Fina aquatic sports in 2023, in athletics in 2019, artistic gymnastics i 2018., football in 2022. They were hosts in handball 2013 and boxing 2015. Well, and I think this is not the end :)

Haven't they pretty much hosted anything possible? Except the Olympics, of course!

    • It's not a coincidence that a lot of the matches that are earlier in the day are in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas where they have roofs.  And most of the games in the outdoor stadiums are later in the day.
    • The best athletes will all be there anyway – it's easier to get a spot in the top 10-15. Only the great champions were ahead of Gismondi today.
    • They are not "oppressed enough" to be mention here.
    • And remember the Olympic Paradox - it is slightly easier to get a medal at the Olympics than at a World Cup because in the Olympics the numbers of racers from the powerful nations are capped at 4.
    • Jimmy Mariano  basketball. 84 years old.   Member of the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Flag bearer for the Philippine delegation at those Games.
    • Franchi had a similarly impressive performance at the 2023 World Championships on the same distance but later she completly missing. I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
    • The last day was a great success, for first. Secondly, even 20 medals are fewer than the 22 from 2023 and 34 from 2021
