Summer Olympic Games 2016 Opening Ceremony Flag Bearers

Recommended Posts

Romanian flag bearer will be Catalina Ponor (Artistic-gymnstics), Romanian Olympic Comittee announced today. That means Larisa Iordache won't go to Rio, our comittee voting for Ponor to be our represent in artistic-gymnastics.

That's wonderful news; muie dinamo!

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

Can't believe I'm just knowing this today! (i was out of Portugal during June)

I'm happy for him but I would prefer a flag bearer from the Sprint Canoe team, they're the ones that have been done an amazing work in the past years! (and won our ONLY medal in London...)

Maybe they won't be in Rio for the Opening? Anyway, sprint canoeing is late in the program.

So what? Nelson Evora was our flag-bearer on 2008 and he's a triple jumper (which, just like all athletics, was late in the program). And he actually won a gold medal back them (our only 4th Gold medal ever :))

I think is a nice gest as João Rodrigues is on his 6th olympics (:yikes:), and he'll probably retire, but I still think Fernando Pimenta (Silver in London 2012 and bronze in last year worlds) would be a better choice.

Well, some of our athletes won't be in Rio for the Opening. That's why Sandra Perković for example couldn't have been chosen for a flag bearer.

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
