Olympic sports program review

A lot of Europeans are really mad that there is *ONE* Olympic sport that they are the worst continent in.

Most Europeans really don't care. Like, at all. A very large majority might very vaguely know surfing is Olympic, but that's about it.

Also, there's really not a 'European identity' in sports or anything, like Germans cheering for French against a South American team, or Norwegians cheering for Italians against an Asian team or something.

If anything, that's more the other way around

They can add sports but not take them away.

But you do realise it's in no way feasible to have it that way, right? :p

Once a sport is added, it has a permanent place in the Olympics as long as the Olympics exist? We'd end up with a 6 week Olympics at some point in time.

Yeah, the sport/event program needs to be able to change as trends and interest change.

With that said, once an event is added it should stay for a while (only exception is demonstration events). The addition/removal of an event should be a well thoughtful and researched process and not be done on a whim.

Yea not a big fan of the one offs. At a minimum 2 to 3 cycles for the individual sports.

Agreed. Which is why I'd like for demonstration sports to be there again, including real coverage and everything, since that would open things up a bit more for adding sports for one Olympics without people expecting it to stick around necessarily.

That goes for several sports though. For example for rowing one needs a 2km long flat and straight part, which isn't a river, and which can be difficult to have anywhere nearby. Meanwhile, it's a sport that a super low number of people can even afford to do, since simply training in the sport is already massively expensive (thousands of euros even for a single scull that can be somewhat decent).

How much does it cost to row in the Netherlands? You can become a recreational rower at my local club in the UK for £16 per month (£192 pa) which would not seem to exclude all but a "super low number" of people from being able to afford the cost of participation. Indeed there are always people to be seen out on the River Soar rowing for much of the year.

P.S. If you haven't rowed before you can do an eight week training course for £40.

    • Heraskevyvh is very good in this season. He did worse last season. Our team is unfortunately doing much worse now.    In luge, unfortunately, it`s difficult to break the dominance of Germany, Austria and Latvia. The USA has also made a lot of progress. I have also read that Russia may return under a neutral banner, so I don`t think we will win a medal in Cortina 2026. The only hope is that we will use our knowledge of the new track in Cortina and then maybe we will win a one medal, maybe in the women's doubles. Unfortunately, we don`t have a star like Armin Zoeggeler as before.

    • I still remember how Demi Moore swept the Razzies for Striptease almost 30 years ago and she won Golden Globes now? The acting industry must be short on talent, scripts or everything else   This being said I don't really watch too many new TV shows these days least of all those Marvel/DC action hero stuff that has taken over in the last decade plus. I know it's a box office gold mine but completely not my taste.
    • Yeah, Anora has been really hard for me to place in my personal rankings. It's a fun and enjoyable film for the most part, but it didn't quite generate the same awe or excitement from me that a few others have this season. Still, I was quite shocked to see Madison lose yesterday because she did a deliver a phenomenal performance in my opinion.    The best actress "race" still feels rather open to me, which adds a bit of suspense to each body's nominations.
    • Anyone remember that  athlete in a European Champs who was given a false start, then protested and got a re-run?  And then false-started twice.   Was kind of like that.
    • Justin Trudeau has resigned as party leader and will resign as prime minister of Canada once the Liberal Party choses a new leader. Once a new leader in selected there will likely be elections shortly after.
    • I'm not surprised. Colturi seems to be trending in the right direction (duh) and the rest of the Italian women's team is nowhere except veterans Brignone and Goggia. The Delagos have regressed badly for whatever reason and even Bassino has kinda stalled despite still being in her prime. The shit will soon hit the fan but it's probably to late before the next OG. It would be ridiculous if Albania wins more medals in alpine skiing than Italy
    • The regular season is over. Tennesse Titans get #1 overall pick for the 2025 draft after NE Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills back-ups on the last day.   Mike Evans (Buccaneers) ended his 11th season with 11th mark of 1,000 receiving yards which ties Jerry Rice's all-time record. Bucs needed to run one more play to get him 5 yards he needed instead of kneeling down a game they had won already.   Wild Card Schedule:   My picks: Chargers, Ravens, Bills, Eagles, Commanders, Vikings
