Guys, there are books that have the bet for Most winning Gold Medal in Olympic.

 

What happens to the money if you either pick US or China. Its crazy lol. Its unthinkable. The books might eat both side of money?

Objectively, we should be in 8th place, if not for Korea's sensational efficiency in gold medals, but that's nothing. If at least 1/4 of these 4th places were converted into medals, it would be our absolute record + add injuries, illnesses, bad luck, etc.

What does „grass roots sporting nation“ even mean?

a) The Chinese practiced fighting „sports“ (king fu) for at least 1000 years before the U.S. even became a thing.

b) When you walk through a random American city, you certainly wouldn’t get the impression of a „grass roots sporting nation“. You would get the impression that at least 90 % of their people are morbidly obese (which is only a slight exaggeration), but maybe Ozempic will „solve“ that problem …

Some of the Italian medals will have beenwon through injuries, illnesses and bad luck of other nations.

You could have also mentioned the Chinese „sins“ (Tibet, Uyghurs, Taiwan, Hong Kong). 
Still Asian countries feel much more like „grass roots sports nations“ when you just look at the (healthiness of) population. I think being the number one in sports is very important for the American identity (especially when they have no war to cheer for), so it would be interesting to see what happens if China takes that away from them for good. We saw what happened when the Soviet Union did it. „Bread and circuses“ has been a very effective approach to keep the population sedated/distracted for at least 2000 years.

I would give the point on grass roots sporting only to the extent it concerns high school or college sport. But this is only a subsegment of college/HS age population let alone the pop as a whole.

These are objective calculations that we have the most 4th and 5th places (5th place in judo is the first place behind the podium). On paper we should win about 45 medals here - that's what the bookmakers' predictions indicated before the games. But personally, I prefer gold in volleyball than 4-5 bronze in track cycling or archery.
