Most people don’t care anyway. The Winter Olympics isn’t even shown in 3/4 of the world

You seem to care that some people actually care...

To be fair, cross-country running also isn't a summer sport. Like cyclo-cross, it's basically a season-independent sport, almost by definition it can be done in any and all conditions.

I don't think I'd go for it in the end, like @De_Gambassi said, it'd open up the way for lots and lots more and not sure that'd be a great idea.

It is to me. Look I get that it can be held with all different types of weather, but c’mon. Winter Olympics should have ice and snow sports only.

Agreed. Winter sports can include sports played at winter like cross country and cyclocross

Um, no they can’t.

With that argument, you could make a case for the majority of summer Olympic sports to be at the winter Olympics.

Yeah, but I agree with that (basically) :p

I was just saying some sports simply aren't 'summer sports' or 'winter sports', the time of year in which they happen to be held due to scheduling don't necessarily make them so.

Wrong (again). Estimated viewership for Beijing 2022 was 2 billion, while for Tokyo it was 3 billion, which isn't a considerable difference for "only 30 countries care for the Winter Olympics." Add the February slot when everyone is at work and all the football leagues are in full force, compared to July/August vacations and the numbers are even more impressive for an event, which allegedly few people care about.

OK this is getting weird but do you honestly believe those figures? Do you actually believe that the Winter Olympics is popular in countries that don’t have snow at winter? (At the same time as the IOC claims they need to include the likes of breakdancing to make the summer games more appealing)

If you do, then fair enough

Wasn't the steeplechase added because it mimicked cross-country?

I believe so, yes. My reaction is because the steeplechase is my favourite event in the summer Olympics (and IMO more fun to watch than XC) :P

Where I personally draw the line would be including sports that *can* be played on ice or snow, as long as they actually are played on ice or snow at the Winter Olympics.

So I would be in favour of cross country running or cyclocross as long as a large part of the playing field for both is covered in snow and part of the challenge includes navigating winter conditions. Also why I'm in favour of snow volleyball being considered.

(I'm also a big fan of including ice climbing in the winter Olympics, but I think that's a less controversial idea with regard to it being a "real" winter sport)

  • 3 weeks later...

those who say that in the future, due to global warming and lack of snow, all sports at the Winter Olympics will have to be held indoors. Do you even think about what you are talking about? The FIS Cross-Country World Cup distances are 20 km skiathlon and 50 km mass start. Is there even a facility in the world that can host 20 and 50 km races? Is it possible? Well, let's imagine that such a facility was built somewhere in Paris and Monaco. Les Rousses spent so much money on building the tracks and infrastructure and then kicked it out of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup because Paris and Monaco, which have more money came to the FIS Cross-Country World Cup. Places like Les Rousses would simply go bankrupt trying to popularize the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, do we really need that?
