Boxing IOC Olympic Qualifier 2 2024

We haven't qualified in boxing since Beijing. For Tokyo we had 3 athletes lose quota bouts (1 had to withdraw due to injury). 20 yo Roulias is the only one this time who made it to a quota bout. Really hoping he can make it.

I'm not sure why we only sent two women here. I thought the youngsters Giannkopoulou and/or Stavridou deserved a chance as well as Linardatou who did so well in the previous qualifying tournament.

Carlo Paalam qualifies via 5-0 win over Sachin Sachin of India

Happy for him as he was desperately unlucky to get an arm injury in the first world qualifier

  My predictions
Settled Qualifiers 4/14
Still possibly correct 23/37
Best case scenario  27/51

Well these haven't gone well but somehow I still have a very outside chance at hitting the 50% mark and remarkably I still have a shot at getting the 5th place  box off winners in M63.5kg and M71kg both correct which is bizarre and despite getting both "finalists" wrong I correctly predicted the box off at 80kg as well.

so Mehdi Parvizi (I didn't even know him until a week ago) is the last chance to save the face of this sport, otherwise it will be first time in qualification era to have no boxer in the Olympics :(

One of the commentators said he calls the Iranians as "fighters" not boxers, I think that pretty much sums up everything about our boxers :d  guys like Gheshlaghi are very fun to watch but they don't get results because they don't land most of their punches.

I'm only upset about Habibinejad :(, he had a relatively easy draw, didn't saw his bout but apparently he gassed in the 3rd round. he participated in a high level tournament in Kazakhstan a week before this competition (and won the gold) that was a big mistake and cost him the Olympics.

This table would probably have been more interesting as a tracking tool over the last couple of days but sure look. The table shows the best case qualification scenario by country. Australia and their Oceanian quotas are now gauranteed to have the most boxers in Paris with Uzbekistan and Brazil the other two countries who will definitely be in double digits with Uzbekistan gauranteed second if Navbakhor Khamidova :UZB can win tommorrow. Ireland could still join them on eleven and are significant favourites in 4 of the 5 fights tomorrow so have a very real shot of at least reaching double digits (and smashing their qualification record of 8). Kazakhstan also have a real shot at hitting double digits which would be a remarkable recovery after getting only 2 at Asian games. France are the last country with a chance to get to 10 which even if they don't quite hit is still a decent return for their home Olympic cycle. The country with their total set at this point that stands out is GB after the most shocking loss of the tournament with Elise Glynn :GBR losing to Marine Camara :MLI today. (They did win a quota with Lewis Richardson :GBR) They have had some dissapointing losses but to be honest 6 quotas isn't that far from a fair reflection of this squad. Other than Ireland and Kazakhstan, India and the USA have the most to gain tomorrow and both still can redeem mediocre qualifying campaigns with 3 wins from 3 tomorrow. I think India can get there, the US will do very well to win 2 tomorrow but like GB if the US ends up with 7 its probably a relatively fair reflection of their squad.

    • Alix Klineman has also announced her retirement following the conclusion of the AVP League    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DB9CZwrPfqj/?igsh=MTZiaDk0NndmaTAzcQ==   What a sad year for beach volleyball, with Brouwer, Meeuwsen, Ludwig, Bobner, Pavan, and now these two retiring.
    • It's good that Argentina is starting to get back on track economically. Every year, all of our alpine skiing teams train in August in Argentina in Ushuaia: "Fine del Mundo", as it advertises itself.
    • The relation of Trump with Russia and, more specific, with Putin is probably the most controversial (being generous) thing of the presidence of Trump, i dont believe the same but is clearly that China help democrats in that election, both are playing their games.   In Argentina the society is clearly divided, the people who are in the left side of the politics, peronist and kirchnerism are very against the goverment, propably the only genuine "rigth-wing" goverment since the recovery of the democracy in 1983. For me and the most part who are in the rigth wing: libertarians, nacionalist and conservatives, is probably the best goverment we see to this days, he made in his first year with a very few legislators in the congress some big and good changes:   1) In the economical: the inflation is only 3% per month since a more of 15% in the last months of the last year, Argentina has now fiscal, financial and comercial surplus-   2) Our country didnt have fighter planes and the goverment buy 24  American F16  -   3) He changes the electoral sistem for a "single ballot" sistem, we have an obsolete electoral sistem that doesnt change from the 19 century and specially, the peronist use for make fraud.   4) In my personal case, he really update the tax sistem for small/medium profesionals and traders.......and that save us to pay the 50% of our earnings to the state.   With a big expectations in the goverment, its better than i thinked before.
    • It could be better, or it could be much worse, for example, if the accusations that he has been accepting large amounts of money from Russia since 2017 are confirmed. Now let Harris win, which will end Trump's political career and I hope that in 4 years the Republicans will put up someone more predictable.     btw, how is this controversial president of Argentina doing?
    • More predictable is not always better, for me the goverment of Biden was one of the worst of the History of USA and i cant imagine what can happen with even a worse version like Harris is.   I hope, for the contrary, Trump be elected and "may be" the things changes for the better in the world.
    • I once read that Harris had never been to Europe before 2020, when she became vice president. On the other hand, her foreign policy will be more predictable, because it will be a continuation of Biden's policies. That is why I hope Harris wins, although the bookmakers are betting on Trump.
    • Harris is totally green on foreign policy. It will probably be a policy 100% led by Biden's people. Harris' main campaign emphasis is on abortion and women's rights.
    • So much for "everybody's laughing at us if we elect Harris"
