Had some time to look deeper into the list.

Overall, 691 athletes are listed, this does not include relay-only athletes (~161 additional athletes).

416 athletes obtained at least one OQT.

15 athletes were invited through OCT (and did not have OQT). :ARG:ESP:SUI gained 2 athletes while :AUT:CHI:ISL:KAZ:POL:PUR:SRB:SGP:TUR gained one athlete.

260 athletes qualified through the universality quotas (and don't have OQT/OCT). This was obtained by 151 nations. 108 nations qualified both a man and a women. Additionally, the refugee team has 2 men. 42 nations obtained a single quota (22 men, 20 women), though some nations obtained at least one quota in the opposite gender via OQT/OCT.

Am I correct in saying that if a swimmer is selected under Universality rule but has an OCT in another event he can swim both competitions? Even if this means a swimmer with the OCT and a higher ranking loses out? John Shortt IRL.gif is ranked 9 in 200m Backstroke but received no invite as this went to Morales of Puerto Rico even though he is ranked 12 but was selected for the 100m under universality. That seems very unfair.

Universality athletes have higher priority than OCT athletes. If a universality athletes also has an OCT, then they can enter two events.

This is what happened in the :PUR example (mentioned above as OCT adding one)

Morales got a universality invite at 100m backstroke and added 200m backstroke with the OCT

Actually I see no reason why universality athletes shouldn't be able to enter two events each like it is at the WCh. Fields are quite thin as it is. :dunno:

Technically, they can do it, but all the OCT times are rather unsensical.

There used to be a lot more universality athletes who entered multiple events. Then World Aquatics decided to cut down the OCT from 3% of the qualifying time to 0.5% of the qualifying time.

This year, we only had something like 5 universality athletes that reached the OCT.

Its rather quite unusual to see that in women's 100m freestyle will be 50 less competitiors than in men's event, even below 30 athletes in total, isn't it? What can be reason behind this? Too difficult to reach qualifying time or what?

29 women in the 100 free sounds ridiculously low, doesn't it? :yikes:

The qualifying time went from 54.38 in 2020 to 53.61 in 2024.

A drop of 0.77 SECONDS!!!

Also doesn't help that a lot of elite 100m freestylers in that time either retired or declined.

It's a combination of fast OQT and very poor depth in the event. Thankfully it's faster than ever at the very top with Haughey, O'Callaghan, Steenbergen, Jack and Sjostrom (if she swims it) all capable of 52 low or faster.

Meanwhile the depth in the men's 100 free is gonna make the rounds brutal and many of the men also have to swim the 4x200 relay between the semi and final which is just 💩
