That men's 8 was impressive, very solid opening world cup for British team as a whole i thought, probably men's double sculls is still a way off and i was hoping Thomas would go for the single scull quota spot but if it improves the four then so be it

We may still have Thomas racing for the quota at the LCR and have Bourne race it at the games, who I thought looked really good today. But regardless who it is, it's pretty safe to say we'll get the quota along with Italy.

I must admit this is another positive takeaway from today, that quota looks likely to be gained.

I think we can also add the men's double sculls to that list too as we stormed the B final but where still a fair bit behind unqualified Australia who were last in the A final and should qualify along with us. As for the other 3 events, we won't qualify anyone in the men's lightweight but I'm still optimistic for us in the women's singles and doubles sculls despite not entering anyone here. The Europeans in two weeks will give us the biggest guide as to what shape the team is in.

the only squad that was a little disappointing was the women's quad, but the comms were mentioning they have had an interrupted winter with niggles and illness so best to see how they progress over next couple of regattas.

Obviously lightweight categories are completely retarded.
1) Height is an advantage in many sports. Should we also have lightweight basketball?

2) „Smaller nations“ have advantages in other sports (gymnastics, table tennis, diving, figure skating), should we also introduce heavyweight categories there?

3) There are way too many events in rowing anyways. If IOC wants to reduce the number of participants, they should have 3 events at most per gender. Rowing is very unpopular and barely anyone cares to watch, so it make the most sense to save costs by reducing the number of athletes in super fringe sports.

In general: More nations are able to win medals -> Bigger viewership

=> How do you (as federation/IOC) make the sport more accessible and how do you make the races less predictable?

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Netherlands was the best country at last year's world championships.

From what I've seen today, I predict GB will win the most gold medals in this year's Olympics. Some of the Dutch boats didn't convince at all (especially the women's four and women's quadruple). For the men's double sculls and men's quadruple there was a win, but not as convincing as last year (very small margins). Karolien Florijn on the other hand showed a very good shape!

Europeans in two weeks, I'm looking forward to it.

GBR in the sweep events look very strong from pairs up to the 8. Women's pair might be the only boat without genuine gold medal hopes for Paris. NED dominance in the sculling events might be slightly diminished compared to last year as you point out. Europeans will be another good barometer!

Are Netherlands competing in the Europeans? I heard the commentator on the world rowing feed say they were taking a week break now and skipping Europeans.

Heavyweight gymnastics is a hilarious idea, thanks for the laugh:lol: And I agree with the reasoning as well.

    • and after  we got the scalp of  in a World Cup warm-up match played in  Dubai    once again, it was a late surge with the bats, finishing with a 6 by Zain Ali at the very last ball (when we needed a 4 to tie and a 5 to win the match)    final score:  165/7 (20 overs),  167/7 (20 overs);  win by 3 wickets
    • China's medal prospects   Short Track Speed Skating: This is the event with the deepest emotional ties to China's winter sports, as China's first Olympic gold medal in winter sports came from this discipline. Unsurprisingly, people have high expectations for it in this Winter Olympics. Medal prospects are mainly focused on men's individual events and the two relay events. However, considering the strong strength of William Dandjinou, I think the probability of winning gold in men's individual events is very low. Instead, the main gold medal hopes lie in the men's relay and mixed relay. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 2 golds   Freestyle Skiing: The performance of this event is crucial to China's success in this Winter Olympics. Eileen Gu remains our super star and is highly competitive in slopestyle and halfpipe. As for the big air, if I remember correctly, she hasn't competed in this event since the Beijing Winter Olympics, so it's hard for me to make a clear judgment on her performance in this individual event. China has the potential to compete for medals or even gold in all three medal events of freestyle skiing aerials. However, given the unpredictability of aerials, the results could be either disastrous or brilliant. Xu Mengtao will compete in her fifth Winter Olympics. Medals: 3-6. My guess: 3 golds; Optimistic: 4 golds   Speed Skating: Similar to the situation in Beijing, the medal hopes still lie with Gao Tingyu and Ning Zhongyan. However, Stolz has shown extremely strong dominance during the Milan Olympic cycle, so I don't think there will be any gold medals in this event. Gao Tingyu has performed excellently in the previous two Winter Olympics, and I still believe he can win a medal in the 500m. Ning Zhongyan also has the potential to win medals in the 1000m and 1500m. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 0 gold   Snowboard: Like in Beijing, Su Yiming remains the star of China's snowboarding. He has maintained a very good competitive form this season, with great chances especially in the big air event, where he will aim to defend his title. He also has the potential to win a medal in slopestyle. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Skeleton: Men's events and mixed team events are opportunities to compete for medals, with Yin Zheng being the key athlete for medal contention. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Curling: China will send both men's and women's teams to this event. Both teams have the ability to compete with high-level strong teams. I predict that either the men's or women's team will reach the top four. Medals: 0-1. My guess: 0 golds; Optimistic: 0 golds   Ski Jumping: This is still a less developed event for China, but Zeng Ping has made significant progress this season, entering the top 8 in many high-level competitions. There is a chance to compete for a medal, but it will be very difficult to achieve. If it really happens, I think it will be quite incredible. Medals: 0-1   I think other events have no chance of winning medals.   summary, Optimistic: 8 golds and 17 medals;  My guess: 5 golds and 14 medals;  Worst-case scenario: 3 golds and 11 medals.
    • we're in Italy! calm down and relax...   everything necessary will appear when it will appear, possibly at least a few hours before the action starts (but don't get mad if it's a few days after the Games are underway)   pure Italian style
    • So tomorrow, the girls will made a protest prior to the mass start for the not-inclusion of Women Nordic Combined into the Olympics   I mean, yeah IOC and FIS have a point that the sport has so few medalled nations in the last decades, but in other hands they still keep in the olympics sports like Equestrian, diving or table tennis where even less nations medal for almost centuries now
    • I was just doing my prediction on the other thread, and then I calculated... I had 21 Gold, 8 Silver, 15 Bronze.  Probably a little too hopeful.   Oops!  (And I didn't even think I was being too optimistic as I was filling it out...guess so...)
    • This should be included in the Olympics soon. Every single event that’s added to the program is a positive thing.
