Team GB medal hopes - Swimming Road to Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

As we commented after BUCS, Angharad’s progression looks genuine with a time 0.04 outside the British record.

my other takeaway from day 1 was the performance of Duncan Scott. He goes a 1m 46 flat in the 200 free and then a 1m 57.7 in the 200 IM off no taper in the same session. Bodes very well for trials and Paris.

Also shall give a shout to Keanna Mcinnes who smashed Laura Stephens in the 200 fly going a 2 08 which was surprisingly quick!

Angharad Evans achieved the OQT this weekend with a new PB 1:06.65 at the BUCS Long Course Championship

BTW, we are getting dangerously close to the 30 athlete cap that British Swimming have in their selection document. Really hoping that a few more can be added to the list to give selectors a real dilemma.

If bolters like Evans come out of the wood work, and various relays, in particular, start looking viable, that 30 'hard' limit will be gone like snow of a rope. That 30 limit is pure penny pinching, but no way they pass up actual medal chnces to keep it.

But the actual cost of sending the team to Paris doesn't fall on British Swimming - as far as I am aware, the bill is picked up by the BOA so cost shouldn't be a factor.

It looks like British Swimming have always had a team limit in their selection policy - I thought it had been reduced to 30 for this cycle but it's been set at 30 for Rio and Tokyo so I can't even blame it on Buckner.

Hopefully as you say, if more than 30 athletes are able to get the individual qualifying standards GB Swimming will have the sense to flex their criteria - they did show they were willing/able to be flexible at last year's trials when they realised they had completely balls'd up their selection for Fukuoka.

Wiki says the limit was actually 35 for Tokyo. The squad was 30 in Tokyo and they skipped one relay when they still seem to be aiming to accept all the relays this time around. ,

I am sorry but you really do talk some nonsense - I'm not sure if you genuinely believe half the stuff that you write or whether you do it trying to get a rise out of someone.

The IOC loves control and the governing bodies love control. Athletics is clearly heading towards an entirely world ranking based system and swimming will follow.

It’ll be interesting what Evans can do in the 200 where we don’t have anyone close to reaching the qualifying standard at the moment. She dropped 7 secs of her PB at the end of 2023 so who knows how low into the 2 20s she can go.

the consideration time is a 2 23 flat and her PB from Dec is 2 26.8

For once Wikipedia is right -  the original selection document published for 2020 had a team size limit of 30. A revised version was published in December 2020 and the limit had been increased to 35.

Can they fit enough for all the relays within 30? I can see one of the women medley relay getting the boot if they need to cut one or two people.
