:CHN Luo Shifang took gold in an exciting women's -59kg competition that lasted more than seven hours across three sessions at the IWF Grand Prix II in Doha.

There were plenty more winners, though.

:CAN Olympic champion Maude Charron went six-from-six in improving her best Paris 2024 qualifying total (she's now 5th overall, 4th useful place with 233kg), :ITA Lucrezia Magistris jumped 7 places after putting a run of bad results behind her (but with her 217kg Total, she's still outside the qualification line in the OQR, 16th overall, 12th useful place) and :VEN Anyelin Venegas moved into the Top 10 (222kg Total, 11th overall, but more importantly, 9th useful place).

Further down the rankings there was a big move by :AUS Kiana Elliott (from 193kg Total to 208kg, from 51st position in the OQR to the top 30).

Luo became the second Chinese woman to turn the tables on a :PRK lifter who had won at the recent Asian Games.

In Hangzhou in October Kim Il Gyong set a snatch world record on her way to victory but at the Aspire Zone venue today Luo made a final attempt at 139kg to win on 108-139-247.

That equalled the Total World Record made by :TPE Kuo Hsing-Chun, who did not compete here, and was a 4kg improvement for her at the top of the rankings.

Kim, 20, was second on 107-136-243, while Charron made 104-129-233.

European champion Kamila Konotop from Ukraine was fourth on 103-127-230 in a high-quality contest.

:PRK athletes are not eligible to qualify for Paris.

Within minutes of the start of the A Group, Magistris was in good shape.

She had made only two good lifts in four qualifying appearances before today, and had doubled that total after two snatches.

By the end of the session Magistris had improved her best total by 10kg to 217kg and will be 12th in the rankings.

Charron almost danced off the platform after completing a career-best performance at her new weight, having moved down last year.

It was a second straight six-from-six for her, after she finished 2nd at the Pan American Games on 226kg, and takes her up to fourth place ahead of Kuo.

There were plenty hoping to move up the rankings from the B and C Groups but because of so many red lights only two made significant gains, Venegas in B and Elliott in C.

In the last few minutes of the B Group, :FRA Garance Rigaud had a chance to overtake team-mate Dora Tchakounte but a 7kg jump for her last attempt was too much.

:NGR Adijat Olarinoye had two attempts to make ground on fellow Nigerian Rafiatu Lawal, who is in the top ten, but missed both.

It looked as though Venegas might become the fourth bombout of the B session when, after being the only athlete to snatch 100kg, she failed with her first two clean and jerks on 122kg.

Venegas, 24, made her final lift for 100-122-222, good enough for tenth place in the rankings.

:BEL Nina Sterckx, clearly upset after a rushed second snatch attempt in the A Group, dropped to 11th.

Elliott, who competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games, has two routes to Paris.

She can qualify via this 59kg category in which she made six from six and a 15kg improvement today, or possibly jump to 71kg where two other Australians are already going head to head, Sarah Cochrane and Jacqueline Nichele.

:MHL Mattie Sasser from the Marshall Islands, who lifted at Rio 2016, is in pole position for the 59kg continental place for Oceania with a best total of 214kg.

Elliott moved within 6kg of that with 96-112-208 while Sasser did not take up her entry.

only NON-Olympic action Today in Doha

and :PRK swept both the women's -64kg and the men's -81kg classes

in the women's -64kg, the 20-year-old lifter :PRK Ri Suk broke seven junior world records in five good lifts.

When she made 146kg on her final attempt, she also bettered the senior C&J world record set 4 years ago by :CHN Deng Wei, the Chinese star who won Olympic gold and 5 world titles before retiring in 2020.

Her 264kg Total is only 2kg shy of Deng's WR.

Silver also went to :PRK thanks to Rim Um Sim, who lifted 113-141-254 kg.

Meanwhile :NGR Ruth Ayodele won the Bronze medal with 98-120-218 kg.

in the men's -81kg, :PRK Ri Chong Song and :INA Erwin Rahmat Abdullah had an epic fight, but at the end the man from :INA missed the 214kg lift that would have given him the gold medal and a new C&J world record also in this weight class.

Finally, :PRK Ri won the gold medal with 374kg Total ahead of :INA Abdullah with 362kg.

Both these scores are a lot better than :ITA Oscar Reyes' winning effort at the last world championships back in September.

Today's bronze medal went to :TKM Gaygysyz Torayev with a modest Total of 338kg.

Karlos Nasar broke another World Record , wasn't he supposed to be injured for a long time ? :d

if he can lift 223kg coming off from an injury, how much he can lift when he is healthy ?  :p and he is still a junior

probably it's time for China to think about picking another weight class if they are only interested in gold medals. 89kg gold medal has already found its winner.

He recovered 2 months ago from the operation he had in April. This was his first official competition.

Things are not at all certain for the Olympics. In terms of winning i mean. The competition is very tough and also BG athletes have the tendency to panic at big events. He can fumble the snatch and then not be able to catch up.

come on, you know he is not an ordinary athlete. you just have to keep him away from behind the wheels :p

the competition is indeed very tough at 89kg, by my count there are at least 5 guys capable of lifting +390kg in Paris but if everybody is healthy nobody beats Karlos. in men's categories he is the 2nd safe gold medal only behind Talakhadze. he only can lose to himself.

    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...

    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
