If (in theory) only about 35 % of the Japanese population decided to get vaccinated, it would be nowhere enough. Btw even without those extra 60 million doses, Japan would be set to get plenty. According to Bloomberg, 120 % of the population is covered. It's not quite Canada and UK who are set to be able to vaccinate everybody 3 times while the EU is at 183 %.

But one thing is the hosts, most athletes are afterall from other countries.

To be precise it says "% of people that believe vaccines are safe".Also, the stats are from 2018 so I guess they mean vaccines in general not covid. In any case I highly doubt Japan has only 35% people that take vaccines.

Also, below it says 7% choose to not vaccinate their children in Japan. That seems like a very low % if it actually was that literally only 35% of people there accept to vaccinate at all.

About a thousand invalid vaccines have been administered in Sweden. Apparently there are no serious side effects (apart from probable ineffectivness)...

So we are proven again and again that the World is simply not ready for such a widespread vaccination plan. Least of all the EU. Rate of vaccination is going slower than anyone could have imagined. Certainly when compared to some non-EU nations.

Why are they invalid? Out of what total?

Least of all the EU?
Criticize EU all you want, but the most effective EU country is (I believe) 6th. Sure, that's way behind Israel and UAE (don't get me wrong, I would have love to see us at the same pace).

And really, the EU doesn't have much to do with it any longer. They made sure that EU could buy plenty, following the demands from the nations (of who plenty cared much about costs). Now that we're getting them, it's mainly between the suppliers and the individual nations.

Right now the main worries are that both Pfizer/Biontech and Astrazeneca are struggling to deliver what they've promised.

And BTW, initial reports are that nothing is really wrong with those vaccines in Sweden. They were transported at a too low temperature (more like the temperatures for the Pfizer vaccines), but they don't expect to be needing another vaccine for the 1000. Some other vaccines with the same problem are held back though.

Pfizer yes. But in AstraZeneca's case, European Medicines Agency (EMA) authorization is missing - according to todays' news, it will come until 31.01. as latest. Hopefully they do it then. After that, it will be indeed the manufacturers (AZ) task to deliver it promptly.

Yes. EMA is expected to make their call in a week, but it was announced today that they will not be able to produce the amounts expected the first month.

That's it, today, after year and almost two months of first detected cases numbee of total cases reached 100 million.

Meanwhile in :POL today we had 2419 new cases and "just" 38 deaths, the lowest number since early October. Due this highly probably from 1st February some restrictions will be lifted. Already from last Monday kids from class 1-3 in primary schools returned to normal realing in schools. There is plan to vaccine over 3 million people until 30th March, but it will probably less as all Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca delivers fewer vaccines than planned.

    • I remember when I was a child and I was on holiday with my parents in Tunisia, I think in 1999? We were on a trip to the desert near the border with Algeria. The guide said something like that: Algeria is a few minutes from here but we won't go there because there is a war going on there and it's not safe.
    • Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.
    • Ah yes, post-colonial bickering never gets too old. Let me grab my popcorn!   Netanyahu is on a personal revenge mission to avenge his brother's death for his entire political life and people still act like they're surprised by his actions
    • MId-1962.  Almost all the Jews were driven out in a few days, even though they had been living there since Classical, pre-Muslim times.   Perhaps our friend could give us details of of any current Algerian plans to welcome them back, restore their property, guarantee their safety etc etc?
    • In what year did Algeria free itself from French influence? 1960, exactly?
    • Or better, perhaps he'd like to tell us what happened to the 140,000 Jews who were living in Algeria in 1960, as against the 200 who live there now?
    • There are still many people of Jewish origin in Central and Eastern Europe who have nothing to do with the state of Israel. What ties does Zelensky have to the state of Israel? Apart from he waś there as president of Ukraine and speaking in the Knesset? Nothing. In the power circles in Moscow there were/are many people of Jewish origin and what about that? A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?
    • Handy guide for the perplexed.
    • I`m a bit disappointed with the starts of the Italian team. I was counting on progress from last year. And here it looks like Bagnis is still very uneven. In Cortina there will be 3 competitions with medals to win and it would be a shame not to use our track to win 1-2 medals. The same goes for luge.
    • On the other hand Errani's serve doesn't make Paolini's task any easier... But Paolini is in a such good shape here, though, that I hope she wins her first title in the old Fed Cup. For Errani, it will be 4: 2009, 2010, 2013. So far, Roberta Vinci has 4 titles with Italy.
