Female sportsman of the year was a very wrong description,...

there are so many athletes and moments that would deserved to be mentioned, that's always almost impossible to come up with a list of this kind and be fully satisfied with it also when reading after some time...

however, those are my picks as they came to my mind tonight...

1 - :USA Caeleb Dressel (Swimming)

2 - even if I'd like to name someone else, I just can't ignore what they achieved in 2019: :NOR Therese Johaug (Cross-Country Skiing) and :NED Sifan Hassan (Athletics) ex-aequo

3 - :USA St.Louis Blues (NHL Hockey)...as of January 2nd, 31st and dead last in the league...in June, NHL Champions (for the first time ever)

4 - :BEL Remco Evanepoel (Cycling)

5 - :AUS Ariarne Titmus (Swimming)

6 - the dramatic 50th over and Super over of the 2019 Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand, especially the controversial 3rd last ball of the 50th over (England batting)

7 - not an athlete, not a single person...but the :IOC IOC as an Institution...for their relentless effort to destroy the Olympic Games as we always have known, watched and loved in the past 125 years...

The same organization that has kept those games alive for 125 years through to two world wars, and even before air travel was a thing. While, I agree they make boneheaded moves here and there, this seems a bit undeserved. The Olympics Games, like everything else in life, are an evolving, living event. It seems unfair for the IOC to make changes that reflect the times. While it may not be what you want, it will keep the games living and thriving for another 125 years.

P.S - I will say that I would be fine giving them this award for moving the Tokyo2020 marathons, that is by far the dumbest move of the year.

Idiot of the year - :BRA Brazilian equestrian federation retroactivelly losing Olympic qualification because nobody remembered to read qualification system.

That's some next level shit.

In an ideal world it shouldn't be this way, but maybe you're putting way too much importance in an event that nobody* in Brazil seems to care about, not even the federation which always have focused on show jumping. The team would probably finish last, and I doubt any improvement would come from this participation. It's a sad situation nonetheless.

Spoiler

*of course we may have like 10 people who actually enjoy Dressage.

    • Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...
    • Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.
