We (Sofia) are planning a candidature for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics. Our sports minister said things were very positive after a long talk with the IOC last week.

weren't this games planned to be held in 2025? I read somewhere that IOC was planning to have an Olympics (senior or youth) every year, so the youth should be moved both to odd years

They were but the IOC scrapped the planned year change last year, hence why the next Summer Youth Olympics will be held in 2022, not 2023 as originally planned.

Quite interesting article.

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1072030/bach-calls-on-nocs-to-work-with-governments-to-defend-european-sports-model-from-serious-threat-of-commercial-enterprises

The so-called "European sports model" has been under pressure in decades. International sport and sport athletes are commercial products. We are far from Coubertin's vision/idea about sport being a competition between pure amateurs. IOC and NOC's have already adapted many free-market mechanisms in their organisations, and professional sport will probably become more and more commercially over the next decades.

Rather funny coming from the head of an organisation that makes it impossible to buy tickets for their events if you don't have the right brand of credit card, or that won't allow people drinking the wrong brand of soda.

Sport federations need to adapt. The International Swimming League would not exist if FINA created a league with a proper prize pool.

    • No Crocodile Concerns - Olympic Rowing Course, Fitzroy River - Rockhampton   From ABC News Australia:   Crocodile farm owner John Lever, who has been working with the animals for more than 40 years, said the population in the river should not be a concern and could be managed. "I think we have to look at it sensibly. It's a great opportunity ... it's a fabulous river," Mr Lever said.   "Crocodiles are most active at night and there won't be night-time activities. Crocs are actively feeding at the water's edge and the rowing will be held over deep water."   Mr Lever is a long-time advocate of the government re-categorising the stretch of the river where rowing is held as an active removal zone to have crocodiles surveyed, trapped and removed.   He said crocodiles were less active in winter when the Olympics were expected to be held (in July/August winter time).   "You're more likely to get hit by a bus on the way to the boat ramp than you are to be taken by a croc," he said.   "In the winter time when the water temperatures go right down, the crocodiles become lethargic and don't eat much because they can't digest food.”
