Vancouver would be a no because Canada’s already denied hosting rights, so residents would be upset. Barcelona is a no because the public would not support it, and it’s whole political crisis with Spain. Lausanne is a no, unless the IOC pays the full cost of hosting the games.

Calgary did, not 'Canada', if I'm not mistaken.

Right, but look what happened in Switzerland this time around. It would be a political and financial gamble.

Canada is pretty big. I pretty much heard very little details on the local news other than a referendum was taking place while people in Calgary/Alberta were hit hard by the yes/no campaign.

Vancouver likely won't host it. We no longer have a track for speed skating and we would have to build an Olympic village (something that was a bit of a nightmare after 2010).

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said if “private funding isn’t enough, we’ll make the final push” to cover the remaining costs.

@Gianlu33 @AlFHg @Dunadan @phelps have you read more about this in the Italian news?

I would love for Vancouver to host it because it the best city I’ve every been to.  You could just renovate the Richmond Olympic Oval (which I visited). Plus Whistlers infrastructure has improved since the games (another place I visited)

Starting from the fact that I'm politically distant from the minister, or better, I'm politically opposite to the minister and to this government in general. It is difficult to trust this government, apart from the ideas they have towards Europe that are silly, to say the least. The fact is that this minister, that is the actual leader of the government, is in contrast with the other (supposed, but in practice inconsistent) leader of the government, who is totally against the olympics. And this contrast is exacerbated by the fact that a third city (Turin), whose goverment is of the same party of this second minister, has withdrawn from the bid. All this premise to say these two things: 1) not sure if this government will last to next summer (but even next spring), so probably they won't give any decision; 2) Italian politics is a mess and find something trustworthy is almost impossible, and this since the end of WWII.

However, my opinion is that in practice a way to have political and financial support from the government will be found, especially if Stockholm withdraws, officially or not. Also considering what happened in Veneto, that is where Cortina stays, this is a good chance to have external fundings to make that region on its track again. In theory.

yeah...but we still have to wait and see if by next year this government is still in charge...:facepalm:

and trust me...from now to the next July (and after, if we really get the chance to host the Games) you'll hear everything and the opposite of that from our politicians...

any question is good to feed their propaganda...

however, the Olympic news never make the headlines...those are all focused on the fight vs the EU because of the balance law and on our internal political fights (today's one is on the law for the reconstruction's funding of the Genua bridge collapsed a few months ago)...

and the sports news are always only about football and F1/Valentino Rossi...

That would be rightly, a waste of money. Any "no" campaign will use it as a rallying point.

We'd have to either host those events somewhere else or scrap (long track) speed skating altogether. (Sorry Netherlands)

Not about what Salvini said, but the article also mentions the dispute between the government and CONI, which is heating up: the CONI president (who is also a newly elected IOC member) was furious today https://www.ansa.it/english/news/sports/2018/11/15/malago-blasts-govts-coni-reform_50e37f2c-cead-4e09-ad48-839e22d741c5.html ... this conflict is quite dangerous for the bid.

No worries, deleting sports that have been on the Olympic program for basically as long as possible and aren't known for widespread corruption is always great, fuck history

    • 2 things...   first, for what concerns the cooperation between inline skating and speedskating federations...sorry to disppoint some of you, but there's a great cooperation between them   the point is that many "summer" skaters just don't want to try the ice because they have too much to give up for that   you name places like Collalbo or Baselga, but for the "summer skating" guys from centeral and southern regions it's not an option, it's not that they make it for a living with those disciplines, they have to focus on their studies and build a post-competitive sport career and they just can't place themselves into a hole in the mountains when they maybe are studying in some prestigious universities in the big cities   as I already posted more than once, the idea of covering one of those tracks in the mountains was something idiotic, a political concession impossible to be sustained   the one and only chance to build a true legacy and an efficient, attractive national training center was to build a permanent indoor oval in Milan, beside the Forum   that would have given all the "summer skaters" a true opportunity to try the ice experience and at the same time find the most useful, attractive, prestigious places to continue their studies and try and manage them together with their sports career   any other place wouldn't stand a chance   second...don't give Salvini any credit he doesn't deserve...actually, I think he doesn't even know that in Cortina there's a sliding sports track    it's not thanks to him that the Cortina track's building finally went underway
    • c'mon, guys! relax! sciallatevi un po'!    you're making me sick...it's just the season start and this is a sport where only the world championship (and Olympic, in the specific years) medals count   don't get mad for a couple of races held thousend miles away from home after the team had already passed their first climax (the internal selection)...there are still 2 full seasons before the Olympics
    • Super Round Results   21/11    b.   2-0  b.   9-1   22/11    b.   8-2  b.   9-6   nothing is decided yet, all teams still have a thoretical chance to make the Gold Medal match   Tomorrow, the last day of the Super Round sees  facing the  at Noon local time (4 a.m. CET) and  facing  at 7 p.m. local time (11 a.m. CET)   the medal games are scheduled for Sunday, BMM at Noon local, GMM at 7 p.m. local
    • very poor performance by the US bullpen both Yesterday and Today    not very impressed by this US team for the entire tournament, also in the Mexican first group (Panama deserved to qualify more than them, but they were lucky with the draw and won the decisive direct matchup)   Venezuela confirmed themselves as a very strong team at bat, but with too many troubles on the mound   Today against Japan they had to make a pitching change already in the 1st inning and basically they had to go for a bullpen game, but it didn't come out like the Dodgers'   Japan always on top of their game, even when the pitching staff doesn't perform at best...frankly, they look more and more unbeatable when no MLB superstar is involved (like in this case), but also when it comes down to the top of the pops it's not that they look worse (see 2023 WBC)  there's a serious risk that their domination becomes even too easy, the gap between them and the rest of the world is widening year after year   Taiwan might look like a surprise, but after the 2023 fail, I was sure they were going to rebound and establish themselves among the top teams in the WBSC tournaments, as they are very good in each and every aspect of the game (batting, pitching...maybe a bit less on defense, but you can't have it all)
