  • 5 months later...

I believe that :GBR selectors met this week to pick the men's squad for next month's event and assuming that they are running to schedule, the squad should be announced over the weekend after the appeal window closes later today.

At the designated selection event held last weekend, neither Joe Fraser or Giarnni Regini-Moran took part - I think both are coming back from injury/illness. This left the path clear for Jake Jarman to be top scorer with 84.1. This included a 15 on floor and a 15.6 on vault but he still doesn't have the degree of difficulty on pommel or rings to be challenging the top performers. James Hall was the second highest scorer on 83.45 including 0.6 in penalties. His highlights were a 14.7 on p-bars and 14.0 on floor.

Max Whitlock has staked his claim to get back on the team with a 15 on pommel along with a 13.9 on parallel bars and 12.9 on high bar whilst Courtney Tulloch is the other specialist who could make the team having scored 14.35 on rings and 15.1 on vault.

Assuming everyone is fit and healthy, squad seems likely to be:

Joe Fraser

Jake Jarman

Courtney Tulloch

Max Whitlock

Giarnni Regini-Moran

Although that would be harsh on James Hall, it would maximise GB's prospects for making individual finals and by extension, their medal opportunities.

it's an interesting call, not least because there's a wild card or two and we don't know the story - e.g. whitehouse.

I think Tulloch is, oddly, more secure than whitlock. They NEED his rings score, whereas for all Max's pommel brilliance, they have decent pommel depth. I think, sadly, Hall is the reserve here. Not much comfort that in both temprement and skill set, he's almost the perfect substitute.

:GBR Men's squad has been announced:

James Hall

Harry Hepworth

Jake Jarman

Courtney Tulloch

Max Whitlock

Fraser and Regini-Moran evidently not back to full strength and given GB have already secured their Paris place, there was no need for them to rush back for this competition. Whilst I don't see Hepworth making the squad for Paris it will be interesting to see how James Hall and Max Whitlock perform because at the moment we have 6 main players on the squad but only 5 places available on the team for Olympics.

:CHN

Men's team list: Sun Wei, Si Cong, You Hao, Liu Yang, Su Weide

Women's team list: Ou Yushan, Zhang Qingying, Qiu Qiyuan, Zhou Yaqin, Huang Zhuofan

Due to the time conflict with Asian Games at home, China choose not to send full A team to WCH. Some of big names will attend Asian Games like Zhang Boheng and Xiao Ruoteng. As I as I know, some other Asian gymnasts may also attend Asian Games instead of WCH like :PHI Calos Yulo and :UZB Chusovitina.

Would be surprised if the likes of Calos Yulo would opt out of the world champs given he would have very good chance of securing Olympic qualification based on his all around ability.

It's intriguing, to put it mildly. I'm half surprised they haven't taken another young tiro - maybe Whitehouse - instead of James Hall. James is an absolute soldier, but you know what he gives you.

:GBR Women's squad was announced earlier this month after the designation selection event was held at the end of August. There are no great surprises:

Jessica Gadirova

Alice Kinsella

Ondine Achampong

Georgia-Mae Fenton

Ruby Evans

This is pretty much the same squad as the 2022 WC with the exception of Ruby Evans who will be making senior team debut.

The DSE was won by Gadirova on a score of 54.55 - 0.649 points down on the score that won her the all-around bronze medal last year. It is perhaps slightly ironic that she actually outscored her 2022 WC results on all of the apparatus except floor.

Alice Kinsella took second place on 53.15. Overall this is down around 2 points on last year but worth pointing out that she didn't go for big routines - her degree of difficulty was down 0.3 across most of the apparatus.

Rounding out the top three was Ondine Achampong with 52.3.

Interesting decision to take Ruby Evans - no disrespect to her but she didn't seem to excel on any individual apparatus so perhaps she is going more for the experience rather in expectation that she will be called on to take part.

    • By the way. It looks like no AIN`s will be in biathlon by the start of the Olympics. Russians filed an appeal to CAS to get AIN statuses in biathlon. But IBU did not agree to have hearings with short procedure. So the decisons are not expected before the end of qulifying period. (FIS could do the same but its top-officials prefer to help russians be back as quick as possible).   I would like to see Dolidovich at the Games. Because she is a real refugee of the relatively high level.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
