It was more to do with FIFA not allocating a direct WC slot to Oceania, as a result  had to qualify to WCs via playoffs against stronger South American/North American countries.
Their football federation believed and rightly so, Aus has a better chance of qualifying through the AFC slot allocations.

Ofcourse AFC offers better competition at both club & international level  as compared to Oceania. 
 

Well for the 2026 expanded WC , FIFA has finally allocated a direct Slot for OFC.

In the group B, for the last matchs, Vanuatu beat Samoa 3-1 and Solomon Island beat Tonga 5-1. The semi finals are New Zealand-Vanuatu and Solomon Island-Fiji.

And Fiji beat Solomon Island 3-0. The final will be new zealand-Fiji. The winner will go to Paris 2024.
