Rowing WR World Championships 2023

Totallympics

Recommended Posts

Not the greatest championships for Canada, but that's to be expected given the level of our program.

Remember when rowing use to be our best performing sport? Thankfully the other sports have step up.

So 122/144 (84.7%) of semifinalists I had ranked in the top 12. (Obviously not counting the eights here). Only two boats not in the top 16 made the semis and one was the AIN (Belarus) boat which obviously had zero form to go off. Accounting for a few errors on my part and quarterfinal/repechage draws meaning in some cases 4 or 5 boats I had picked were competing for the same spots in the semis I think this estimation has gone pretty well. Obviously we will see how many actual qualifiers it gets right and medals well might be less accurate so not sure how useful it would be as say an Olympic predictor. It no longer looks quite as clean but at least nine of the semifinalists were right in every boat class so we should be on for an 80+% hit rate on correct Olympic qualifiers.

It was a bad day for Greece and Belgium who had multiple projected qualifiers miss out on the semis. Italy are the big winners so far.

Italy what a performance

yeah, way better than expected

but it's only a first step

most of these boats won't even qualify to the Olympics...and the medals are far away from our capability (with 2, maybe 3 exceptions)

however, having 12 of our 13 Olympic boats (in 1 event we didn't participate) in the top 12 of the World is great, it means that our rowing is still very good on average

unfortunately, right now we miss a few absolute top class rowers to build 2 or 3 crews being consistently a gold medal threat

:GBR and :ROU in SF #1 (3rd spot is very open, I hope :ITA but I don't trust them at all)

:CAN and :USA in SF #2 (:NZL should get the 3rd spot, but :IRL might sneak in into the top 3 as well)

in any case, if the weather is like today, the lane draw will do it, as there's too much disparity between the lanes 1-3 and the others (Today, good 90% of the races had the boats in the lanes 1-3 also in the top 3 of the rankings, with very few exceptions...and not only because they were the top seeds)

what are France's chances for the LW2x and M4-?

and for the rest of the Tqo, can we hope to qualify one or two boats?

Looking distinctly likely that :GBR could end up sending one of their smallest rowing squads to an Olympic Games in over 20 years. Having only entered 12 out of the 14 classes, they are now down to just 9 boats still in contention.

The only positive to the situation is that over half of the remaining British crews could find themselves on the podium at the end of the regatta.

    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
