If Japan cancels these games they will have plenty of backlash and don't stand a chance to host another Games for the next 50 years at least IMO. There will be a LOT of furious people over this.

The article literally says they want 2032....

They can WANT it but who says they get the votes? (unless they BUY them).

If the IOC supports the decision, I would suspect we will be seeing a Tokyo 2032 games

Behind a paywall like every shitty english newspaper. Can someone give me some quotes from the article (that isn't the first paragraph)?

Hopefully this helps:

Yeah, IOC will be left almost bankrupt with this. They will have their "vendetta" with Japan in some way.

The IOC is financially sound. They will take a hit but survive. I am more worried about the NFs who rely on Olympic money, especially those who asked for an advance loan

So sad.

I feel for those who had to miss 2016 and were aiming for 2020. I also feel bad for the baseball and karate athletes who will not live their Olympic dream...

Maybe they will add them into 2024 as a conciliation prize.

Unlikely - most people will accept it.

I can see all other bids opting not to even bother.

The key thing will be how Japan reports it in the coming days- do they announce it or deny it or ignore the reports.

Should have postponed to 2022 and then tried to get 2024 to move to 2026 and 2028 to 2030.

Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid

It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
