Checking Wikipedia for the schedule, but the 25k seems to be missing? :yikes:

Yea, it was dropped from the program

Unbelievable. Well, not really, because it's not urban and fast-paced enough, but come on. Luckily it's at least not actually called 'Marathon swimming' as far as I see in the official things, since one can't have a 10k as maximum and call it that obviously.

I wonder how many of the swimmers here already have quotas. Both of our swimmers in the men's 10k already qualified in men's 1500m.

the problem is that any quota place obtained in the pool doesn't count at all for the Olympic 10km race

you have to earn your spot in the specific OQR for this discipline (Fukuoka and Doha, basically)

in the women's 10km, however, I think there are only a few girls who already have a OQT in the pool: for sure, :USA Katie Grimes, :FRA Anastasiia Kirpichnikova; then I'm not sure about :NED Sharon Van Rouwendal, :GER Leonie Beck.

I think it's all.

among the men, both :HUN and both :GER swimmers and stop.

I don't think the :FRA guys have a good 1500m/800m time (maybe Logan Fontaine, but it's improbable) and both our guys :ITA Paltrinieri and :ITA Acerenza this year haven't swam the OQT yet 'cause they're focusing on this race to earn the quota place (our technical director said without any problem that our target is getting all 4 quotas here in Fukuoka, without having to participate to the next world champs in Doha with the Olympians), but I'm pretty sure that they will get an OQT in the pool the first time they really swim that races seriously (and Paltrinieri is going to swim the 800m and 1500m in the pool at this world champ, so, it's just a matter of time)

p.s. I'm surprised :FRA have not chosen Marc Antoine Olivier for the 10km race (but it looks it's just a disciplinary choice, rather than technical)

Are you sure that Paltrinieri doesn't have the OQT? I think he swam 14:49 at the italian championships. Neither Van Rouwendaal nor Beck have the OQT and i am not really sure if they will try. I don't see either of them competing in the pool next year. On the women's side Jungblut and Tadeucchi missed the OQT by less than a second.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Which annoys the hell out of me since were shrinking the field size of this event, and wasting an easy opportunity to include swimmers already lodged in the Olympic Village.

you're right, Paltrinieri has the OQT (I was thinking to the Italian standard time, which is faster than that)

in any case, for him it's not a problem at all...nobody would even think of leaving him home next year (and he surely will swim faster in the pool once he gets the quota place in the 10km race)

Taddeucci also will never swim the pool events in any case, for her they're just a training for the Open Water events

Wait, I thought that athletes with 800m and 1500m OQTs can compete in the 10k?

This is what the qualification document says:

"In addition to the process above, any Federation with qualified pool athletes who have achieved an Olympic Qualification Time (OQT) in either the 800-meter or 1500-meter freestyle (for both genders) may enter those athletes into the Marathon Swimming Event provided such entries will comply with Federation team limits where no more than two athletes of the same gender per Federation."

    • They're very likely going to give Leerdam a 1000m spot no matter if she qualifies in another distance or not. A skater who is picked like that would, in the 'matrix', be placed in the first spot for that distance, which would push Schulting to the spot for 3rd place in the 1000m. That's the 15th and last spot on the matrix, and would mean she is out if there are more than 8 different skaters above that position.
    • Could they give Leerdam a place in the 1000 at Milan if she qualifies through the 500? And surely Vekerk would be the one to lose out rather than Schulting?
    • Makes it extra tragic that she's still quite likely to not actually make it due to Leerdam most likely making it anyway despite falling...seems like everyone there just automatically assumed her 2nd place will be enough and started celebrating
    • Stage 14 in Semmering (AUT)   Women´s Giant Slalom:   1. Julia Scheib    1:56.46 2. Camille Rast    1:56.60 3. Sara Hector   1:56.86   Full Final Results HERE
    • Stage 13 in Livigno (ITA)   Men´s Super-G:   1. Marco Schwarz    1:10.33 2. Alexis Monney   1:10.53 3. Franjo Von Allmen   1:10.58   Full Final Results HERE
    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
