I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else nominate Eliud Kipchoge. For me he is one of the absolute greatest in global sports right now, with another world record in the marathon just last september.

You may also notice that I interpreted the Youth Athlete competition as actual juniors competing in youth competitions, leaving the juniors that broke through at senior level for the Breakthrough category.

Actually I considered him but my problem is that he dropped the World Championships for Berlin. For me I prefer athletes that competes in the big events. :)

I see some votes for the swedish Equestrian team jumping being placed in Men's Team, even though there's a woman on the team. As we don't have a category for best mixed team (we will discuss this next year) and voting is already ongoing, I will leave this question here:

To be fair, in marathon, races like Berlin are the big events, certainly not world championships :p

But yeah, Kipchoge. Another of those athletes that makes me think "Right, that's true!"

But how many people watch Berlin Marathon? Feels like World Championships is bigger worldwide. It’s easier to vote for athletes that you can follow.

Even as an avid athletics follower, I have to kind of force myself to watch the marathon at the world championships, whereas Berlin, London etc are simply the much bigger events and easier to follow. I honestly think you are underestimating how big the large city marathons are :d

Marathon = city marathons, basically. The rest is a nice aside, even the Olympics aren't that much bigger (if they even are bigger).

Maybe next season additional category, sth like:

the biggest sensation, the biggest surprise, an underdog wins... sth like that? This is a little bit different than "breakthrough" and not a king of "biggest fluke"...

Anyway, I am waiting for the final voting, could be very interesting!
