Hello :)

I thought it'd be interesting to work on a list of London 2012 medalists who didn't qualify (or likely won't qualify) for Rio 2016. I am specifically talking about athletes/teams who missed out on qualification, not on athletes/teams who simply retired.

Some basic rules:

1. Athletes who didn't qualify because they retired at a time they could still technically qualify for Rio won't count

2. Athletes who didn't qualify because they are banned will only count if they are officially still 2012 medalists (example: no Alptekin)

3. Athletes who are still active but were apparently not good enough to be selected for qualifiers will count

The Romanian women's gymnastic team could be in trouble as well (according to the experts in the gymnastics thread): if they don't qualify that would be a huge thing, considering they won a medal in the last 10 straight Olympics.

Any more examples?

Saudi Arabia failed to qualify a team in show jumping after winning a bronze in London. Moreover, they didn't even qualify in individual jumping, for the first time in 24 years.

Canada's men's eights in rowing

Mark Oldershaw and Adam van Koeverden have yet to qualify in canoeing/kayaking.

Christine Giriard is still competing but with only one spot doesn't look like she will make the team.

    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.

    • yes, there are (or there was, at least) don't forget that the women's 800m had world and olympic champions like Semenya, Jelimo and Nyonsaba...basically, it was 10 years of DSD winners only the same Athing Mu was suspected to be DSD (never confirmed, but somehow she totally disappeared after Tokyo) then, there were the 2 girls from Namibia (1 won a medal over 200m in Tokyo) in Italy we have the living scandal Valentina Petrillo (a paralympian!!!), who's actually a real man not to mention the weightlifter from who took part into the Tokyo Games so, it's a real problem all around the globe, not just a US crusade against a few woke idiots
