Recognized inside the small part of the sports community that is so into these things as we are here, but Zambia winning a medal in boxing or something is definitely not going to make any headlines around the world in non-specialized media - with luck it'll be mentioned somewhere in the final lines of some small article :p

I do get that though, and for small nations it can be quite literally the only time they're ever even mentioned outside of their own country. I mean, if it weren't for Kirani James, I don't think I would ever have heard Grenada be mentioned in any way on TV or in a newspaper.

It really depends on the exposure of the sport from the start, yeah. Fiji in Rugby Sevens gets quite some recognition, at least on Belgian TV (which I mostly watch during the Olympics for reasons)

Kirani James is another example, or another few nations in athletics like Botswana or the Bahamas.

This exposure increases for team sports, naturally.

actually, I've read and heard Grenada's name a lot of times on tv and newspaper when they talk of "those Nations" where you should go to hide your money (AKA tax haven)...:p

I don't have the kind of money that would make me interested in watching or reading items about that, sadly

I think that 10 events for sprint canoeing is perfectly fine :p and that extra events for diving and shooting is definitely a no-go :nopompom:

Generally speaking, if we want even more events and athletes than we already have, something radical would need to happen (splitting the summer olympics, having multiple hosts, an extra week, etc.)

I know this is not meant be realistic, but still.

  • 1 month later...

The Summer Olympics are too large. I would split them into Outdoor (truly summer) and Indoor (autumn?), held in different countries.

Outdoor Olympics: athletics, triathlon, road cycling, mountain biking, BMX, open waters swimming, kayaking, rowing, sailing, football, rugby, tennis, golf, field lacrosse, field hockey, beach volley, beach soccer, equestrian, archery, surfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, skateboarding, climbing.

Indoor Olympics: indoor athletics, track cycling, gymnastics, pool swimming, diving, futsal, basketball, indoor volleyball, indoor hockey, indoor lacrosse, indoor tennis, ping pong, squash, weightlifting, boxing, karate, judo, taekwondo, ju-jitsu, fencing, wrestling, billiards, bowling.

I would also make as many mixed team events as possible.

So first of all I would add more mixed team relays.

Tennis, badminton and ping pong would be played with a Sudirman Cup-style format, with a singles tournament and a doubles tournament.

Team sports would be played on four quarters (two for each sex), or a best of seven sets (with the last set switching teams every 2 minutes).

how to kill once and forever the already declining interest for the Games...

the Olympic are the Olympics also (maybe, mainly) because they have so many sports all together at the same time in the same place...

having multiple host, split program or making them too long (or too short) would only meke them worse...
