An interesting thought that I had about De Grasse, is that while he won’t be an Olympic champion in the 100 or 200, most likely, he is the only male sprinter right now who can still successfully pull off the double with Bolt having retired.

The sport has shifted to specialists in the 100 and 200.

Think Lyles can do both, I think he just wanted to concentrate on getting his first major here, but in future will double up.

I would agree with that

Can anyone with a deep knowledge of the decathlon give me some more insight- what are the disciplines Warner, Mayer and LePage are most successful in?

Expand

I don't have a deep knowledge, but:

Warner: Good at running, including field events like long jump.  Weakness is throwing events.

Mayer: Good at throwing and pole vault.  Not terrible at running.

I'm not very familiar with LePage, but judging by his build I would assume similar to Warner, but maybe problems with the hurdles and stronger at high jump?

The issue, as a Canadian fan, is that you can get a lot more points with a good throw than you can with a strong run.

Why ...?

Coleman and Lyles are both better than him at both the 100 m and the 200 m and as far as i know they both plan to do the double next year. I think absolute perfect case for him would be to win 2 bronze medal. Realistically he should either not win any individual medal or only 1 bronze.

Men's decathlon could get really interesting behind Mayer. LePage, Warner, Kaul, Shkurenyov and Victor all could win silver/bronze.

Nice prelim run by Klosterhalfen. The field is very weak, if she can't at least win silver here, then she should be disappointed.

    • Regarding the swimming they have added the 800m for men and the 1500m for women so cutting numbers would be odd.
    • That quota I’ve been told by an athlete aiming to qualify who I know online.
    • Has the quota for Canada been offically confirmed anyway, or is that just a rumour? I can't find anything on google about it (nor the suggested quota for England's athletes someone posted earlier).   12 per gender would make sense (it's roughly what Canada sent to Birmingham). 12 overall seems dumb.
    • Some sports have qualification systems   3x3 basketball (wheelchair) Para-cycling Powerlifting Weightlifting
    • In the past few games, Canada (and other nations) was given an overall athlete quota which they then divided it through the various sports.
    • Whose decision was this, Team Canada's or the Organising committes?
    • I’ve been told there are no straight finals planned for the swimming.
    • I’m suprsied the games is still that big!
    • Actually now that I look at the numbers, it makes even less sense. Almost the entire reduction of 4800 athlete down to 3000 is explained by the removal of events. There's no reason to halve our swim team, considering we likely have the third strongest team
