Now that the election has been won by the LNP that abominable plan to host athletics at QSAC is dead and buried.

will they be brave enough to impose the original Gabba renewal plan or will they have to come down to some kind of compromise and go for a plan B?

Now that the election has passed I think they'll go for a new stadium in Victoria Park. They were only being non-committal about their plans because building a new stadium in Brisbane is a vote loser in the northern part of the state. Rebuilding the Gabba just has too many problems including making AFL and cricket homeless during the rebuild.

Any ideas / rumours what new sports / events in 2032 may be?

It's still early on, but I suspect cricket and baseball/softball have an early advantage. If they have a good tournament, I think squash may have a decent chance at returning despite not being really high on Australia's priority list. American Football and Lacrosse will likely remain North American sports in the future.

Netball might make a play with a women's only event. I expect rugby nines to make a push to be added alongside sevens, but I don't think the IOC will add them.

If Australian Rules Football gets added as an Olympic Sport then they are guaranteed to be added.

The NFL are pushing had to develop flag football in Australia in hopes of getting it included in 2032. I hope they fail tbh.

Single gender sports fail the gender equality requirement so netball is out unless they can rapidly fix their gender problem. World Netball not so long ago was refusing utterly to sanction men's international netball or even support the growth of men's netball so they kind of sabotaged themselves and are only changing courses out of self interest because Brisbane was awarded the Olympics.

It doesn't even make sense to propose Aussie rules given how poor the participation is outside of Australia.

    • I think there was a feeling before the obstacle course was introduced that really, really solid endurance runners were starting to dominate - in Triathlon you might call it the Alex Yee conundrum. Personally, I don't mind at all if the 'martial' elements are reemphasised as that is the real 'soul' of the sport - Triathlon, Marathon and Road cycing are there for genuine endurace, MP is in some senses a 'soldiery' test - one reason I thought Judo might have been a better addition than the obstacle course. But placing a higher emphasis on the fight bits over the flight bits seems a legitimate idea - though it should also increase the X-country nature of the run so that the test of a fresh shooter at the beginning is rather different from the test of a knackered one at the end. I quite like the artificial hill in rio.
