Summer Olympic Games 2020 Official Countdown Thread

Recommended Posts

2020OfficialCountdown.png

Today we mark the 2 years to go milestone until the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo.

It may seem a long way off in the distance right now but we are now over halfway through the Olympic cycle and the countdown towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is well and truly underway.

Members can post here on the thread to help build momentum as we countdown to the big event. This thread can be used to mark any milestones on the way, right through to the opening of the Olympic village, tracking the arrival of delegations, the raising of our national flags in the Olympic village and so on.

At some stage in future, possibly the 1 year to go mark, an Olympic Countdown Clock depicting the Olympic rings will be introduced to help us mark off milestones along the way and countdown the remaining days as we edge closer and closer to the Opening Ceremony on the 24th July, 2020.

So without further ado, let the countdown commence!!

Also if that "August 20" part is the day of revelation, then that's quite convenient for him. He will know by then in which classes both AUS/NZL qualify, and therefore he'll know which sailing class to aim for. :p My guess right now would be Finn.

I cant await the ticket sale to open, i hope to get my hands on some tickets for the following events:

- Athletics: The day of womens 200 m or womens 5000 m final

- Swimming: The day of mens 1500 m free or mens 200 m IM final

- Tennis: From quarterfinals onwards, preferrably on the mens side

- Basketball: Any game on the mens side with the US or Germany (if Germany qualifies) or any quarterfinal/semifinal

- Track cycling: The day of mens sprint final

- Equestrian: The day of individual/team jumping final

- Fencing: The day of womens individual foil finals

- Gymnastics: The day of womens balance beam final

- Table tennis: The day of mens individual final

Tickets seem rather expensive for athletics/swimming/gymnastics and of course basketball, but for cycling/equestrian the tickets should be rather cheap, so lets see, hopefully not too many other german fans will try to get tickets ...

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
