:VEN declined one of its spots in jumping, therefore losing its team quota. Both Venezuelans left get individual quotas, bumping both :PAN  :PUR. :PUR was next best team and thus gets the team quota, and all of this effectively screws :PAN

@dcro what do you make of this mess?

These games are expected to be under budget, the second Pan Am Games in a row to do so. You can definitely host mega sporting events without going over budget!

It's not too hard, but that would require going smaller and sadly the IOC seems to not want that.

Let's remember the medal table from 2015:

Spoiler

Do we think the top 5 will be the same this year? I say there's a good chance, but Brazil should fight (once again) with Cuba for 3rd place. Also, I'm not too certain about Colombia. They did disappoint at the last Central American and Caribbean Games (at home!), staying behind Mexico and Cuba. I totally can see Mexico in 5th. Also, don't count out Argentina, which I think improved a lot the last few years. So 5th Place are among those three.

I wonder if the situation in Venezuela will have its implications in sports. I think it will have a impact, just don't know how big it will be (I wouldn't be a shock to see Venezuela out of the top 10). Chile I think will return to top 10 after two Games - Lima should be a better Pan Ams for them compared to Toronto. At first I was doubtful about Peru's chances, but the extra events should give them at least top 10 (it would be very disappointing otherwise).

Anyway, I think it will be something like this:

1. :USA

2. :CAN

3. :BRA

4. :CUB

5. :MEX

6. :COL

7. :ARG

8. :ECU

9. :PER

10. :CHI

What you guys think?

I actually think that Canadian Olympic Committee's apathy towards PanAm Games since forever (except when they've been hosts) will see them drop to third of fourth, which is a circumstance both, Brazil and Cuba could benefit from. Mexico will closely fight for that 5th spot with Colombia and Argentina. As for the other 3, Chile has been quietly improving during this cycle, only disaster could prevent Peru from reaching a top 10 finish, so that leave Venezuela to fight off Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for the last spot.

Another quota for Ecuador @hckosicehis time in men's laser.

The other spots went to Chile, Colombia & Uruguay, plus two wildcards to be allocated.

Looks like :PUR withdrew or Chile actually won a quota at the North Americans, which means :LCA got the 4th spot here...

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
