Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

Rowing changes: LW2x (men and women), Asia and Americas each lose a boat (-8 quotas), and the Quad and Fours each lose a boat (-16). I wish they saved one of the fours events and reduced all continental quotas to one boat max.

I don't think it would be good for rowing's long term stability if they reduced the continental quotas. It already has difficulties in terms of diversity/competitive nations in the larger boats. If boxing/modern pentathlon/weightlifting ever get off of the IOC's radar, rowing could be the next target.

Wow the swimming A times. Insane.

The Olympics Qualifying Times OQT are just the 14th time of heats of previous Olympics in the particular event. (They use 14th place of previous for Tokyo too).

But Olympic Consideration Time OCT is just OQT + 0,5% which is insane.

In case of Tokyo OCT was OQT + 3,0%.

To be fair, very few athletes actually qualified through the OST/OCT in 2020. With the reduction of swimming quotas, there's a chance we may not even use them.

It does matter though.

How on earth do they expect 16 relays to qualify with these OSTs? 16 is waaaay to much for swimming anyways, given the inflation of relay events. It should be 12 at best.

There are no longer minimum time standards for relays. Honestly the OCT is pretty useless now, they might as well say any extra spots will be awarded to the next highest ranked athletes.

OMG!

And all FINA criteria, of all modalities, were taken from the IOC website

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if someone from Doha 2024 contacted FINA, they need to give some of the large nations an incentive to attend.

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
