Interesting report from ITG

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1137519/wt-la28-qualification-system

so after 2024 ranking will be based on the last 2 years and not 4! that was obvious but it took WT so many years to finally realize 4 years is too much.

and looks like they want to give all Olympic quotas based on the ranking! no more continental qualifiers? I don't think that's a good idea :dunno: lots of Olympic medalists (including some Olympic Champions) came from the continental qualifiers despite being very low in the ranking.  Ulugbek Rashitov had no ranking points when he traveled to Tokyo but came back with a gold medal.

Not sure where you read that there will be no continental qualifiers?

honestly the current system is not good as it punishes big nations. It is really difficult to qualify more than 2 athletes per gender.

my ideal system would be:

2years period (but no reduction of points)

Get rid off Grand Slam (will not happen)
automatic qualification for world champion 2027 (2quotas per category)

8 renking quotas

4 continental qualifiers (Oceania to join Africa or Asia) no Limitation regarding participation

1 host nation

1 universality/refugee/whatever

but in general I think taekwondo deserves more quotas. Either 8 categories with 12 or 4 categories with 24.

how do you read this ?

if the qualification period ends in 31 May 2028 there will be no time for the CQs anyway

Quote

Under the proposed changes announced to delegates at the World Taekwondo General Assembly, Olympic ranking points would be reset from June 1 2026, after which the qualification period would run until May 31 2028.

Ranking points have previously been accumulated over the quadrennial cycle between Games, a system deployed for Paris 2024, but World Taekwondo intends to reset all athletes to zero after every two years from 2024.

For Los Angeles 2028, this would mean the period from June 1 2024 to May 31 2026 constitutes an initial period with no direct qualification events, although points contribute to eligibility for Grand Slam events from 2026 to 2028.

or did I misread anything ? :dunno:

Pretty solid day for :GBR on the first day of the Rome Grand Prix

Gold for Jade Jones

Gold for Caden Cunningham

Bradley Sinden had a bit of an off day though as he exits in round of 16.

From ranking perspective, that should help solidify Jones' position in the rankings and will move Cunningham closer to automatic quota spot

Sinden is as safe as houses anyway, he's pretty much immovable now from the top of the rankings; it was however VERY useful for Jones who has been a bit off the boil last 18 months. Cunningham might just peak at the right time. Big event tomorrow for GB is Lauren Williams who's had a shakey time having looked very good. Cook/Walkden, like Sinden, can probably afford an off day if it comes to it

based on what do they count the period for an athletes if it ends with a tie ? because in 2nd period Brazilian player made 3 hits while Egyptian made 1 and still Egyptian won it :d

1) number of turning kicks
2) number of head kicks
3) body kicks
4) punches
5) number of small touches (not good enough to score a point but still registered)
