So I guess :CHN Zhang Zhanshuo decided to focus on the 400 free instead of the 400 IM? That's unfortunate because I believe he would've had a better shot at making the final in the 400IM. It's also unfortunate because we lose another athlete who had the 400 IM OQT and now with just over 2 months to go in the qualification period, we have roughly 9 ENTRIES in the men's 400 IM:

It's also quite possible that Brendon Smith wouldn't qualify at Australian trials given his form this year. Japan might add one of Seto or Honda as their 2nd entry and Wigginton, Gabor Zombori, and Sates could be added through OCTs. However, it's quite likely that we'll have even fewer entries than the women's 200m butterfly from Tokyo where their were only 17 entries.

This event had the misfortune of having an insanely fast heats in Tokyo that nuked the qualifying time from 4:15.84 to 4:12.50. If AQUA followed their old rules where they set the OQT as the 16th fastest swimmer in the heats instead of the 14th fastest swimmer, the new qualifying time would've been 4:15.76 instead.

I wonder how far it will be till the event is under consideration for the axe.

It also probably doesn't help that it has the most odds on favourite in the entire swimming pool in it this year!

The women's 200m fly is at danger again to break its own record, mind. By my rough calculations there's only 16 people who have hit either the OQT or the OCT, once you adjust for 2 per nation.

Zhang Zhanshuo is still possible to swim 400IM on Olympics as he qualifies in 400 free and is the only person meeting standard on 400IM. If he will swim or not is depending on his own willingness

it's also the "Marchand effect"

when you know that you start 7/8 secs behind the eventual winner, you immediately try another option

most races of this kind tend to decrease the average 1st tier participants (and would have more 2nd/3rd tier swimmers, if only the OQT wasn't that insane)

I guess, but behind Marchand the depth is weak and really any of the qualifiers could medal, whereas in the 400m free is insanely strong and there are relatively few athletes who could medal.

Tang's 1:04.39 now makes China a strong gold medal contender in the women's medley relay.

Their backstroke leg still has some work to do before they’ll be in contention for gold…
