Most unexpected team qualifier: men’s field hockey

Most unexpected individual qualifier: probably Daniel Gaysinsky in karate.

Team that failed to qualify that hurts the most: men’s baseball from a medal perspective, men’s basketball from an importance perspective. The women’s 3x3 team not even having a chance to qualify was a bitter pill, too.

Athlete that failed to qualify that hurts the most: Haya Jumaa in karate since she is probably the highest ranked Canadian athlete in any sport to fail to qualify (not counting internal selection), and she will likely never get another chance. The Christa Deguchi / Jessica Klimkait internal selection battle in judo was also really painful.

Archery. Both athletes lost their decisive match against some dead-average opponents

I was expecting Handball. Nonetheless Dan Olaru deserves one of the spots since he and Mirca have the 2nd best matchplay score in mixed team only behind Korea in the last 2.5 years (World Cup + world championships) So well deserving

1) men's basketball. quite unexpected and somehow lucky

2) lots of names. despite being one of the best teams in the world (if not the best) we will have only 3 athletes in Karate!! even USA and Kazakhstan will have more.  wrestling failing to qualify a full team was also disappointing. Sajjad Mardani in Taekwondo, also Keikha in Gymnastics. but above all, Sohrab Moradi our Olympic Champion in weightlifting. if healthy he was 90% guaranteed the gold medal. it still hurts thinking about how he failed to qualify because of those stupid rules  despite all the hard work.

I can answer to the second question: for me probably handball mens team - but they did not even get into the qualifier.

Sometimes the problem is not that there is no funding for a given sport, but there is too much of it. IMO this is one of the problems in our handball for a number of years - lot of money with not efficient use of it and no development in crucial areas (coach development for instance) despite the huge amount of €€€€ spent.
