They can be separate. For men’s and the women they can nominate 5, but if they have individuals qualified they must be included in the five. A travelling reserve can be included (but not counted) For the mixed relay, they can only nominate 2 men and 2 women (no requirement to include qualified individuals) and there’s a travelling reserve for each gender (again, not counted as a quota) So the max quotas would be 14 (5 in men’s, 5 in women’s, 4 in mixed). In practice it would be far less as there would be crossover (and individual qualifiers would bring the number down too)

The seeding has the same procedure for both days. So the place at the first days does not effects the seeding for the second day. Important note: DQ and DNF at the first day allows to start at the day 2. DNS at the 1st day does not allow to start at the day 2

In the women's team competition Japan lost early to Austria, Canada to Ukraine, USA to Korea. Korea and Ukraine (0 fencers qualified to Paris between the two of them) in semifinal. In men's competition, #1 Japan knocked out by #16 Singapore, only Italy of the top 4 reaching the semifinal (and by barely surviving to Ukraine and Egypt). Goes to show how small a field of 8 (or 7+1 in the women's) teams is.
