  1. The Queen demands her subjects commence the most noble of sport, to compete for her affection and their own pride as subjects of the Queen
  2. Yes, this I agree with. Good point about the CAC Games for Trinidad and Tobago by the way. I totally forgot about those . For Malaysia, I think they take the CWG more serious than the AG for track cycling. It means more for them to beat the British.
  3. Badminton is known as a posh- British sport in the US (and historically it was), and I’d say wrestling is a rather bleach sport too. While both are universally diverse, and definitely deserving of commonwealth recognition, they were kept around because they benefit certain region. Weightlifting benefits Oceania, Athletics benefits the Caribbean, Swimming benefits the countries Down Under, Badminton benefits East Asia, Wrestling benefits Africa (and now India), but shooting is mysteriously left out. It’s just odd.
  4. I don’t think any athlete dreams of becoming the next Commonwealth Games champion . What I tried to say is that historically the Commonwealth has been anti-India and anti-Ireland. For Indians, this reflects the fact the British culture sees them as unequal citizens of the commonwealth. The games are important to the development of athletes. I mean, I’m pretty sure they’re the one reason India, Malaysia, and Trinidad and Tobago even have Track Cycling programs in the first place. Also, many CGAs like send their only representatives in shooting. The Queen’s Prize has one of the most diverse entry lists. It just seems like the games are about Britain and not a celebration of commonwealth culture as they’re marketed as.
  5. Saddest news I’ve seen all week . It was a yearly tradition of mine. It’s one of only a few cycling races I religiously. I have great childhood memories of watching races, of meeting the riders. It’s a shame that other kids won’t be able to do those things. Money ruins everything. Nothing has ever improved with money. Shit day to be a sports journalist in the US. I just get more and more tired of this country by the day. I really hope my generation brings change in the next few years.
  6. Well quite a day in non-Trump US politics. First, the NCAA announced that all athletes will be allowed to make money off their image, likeness, name, etc. Second, the US House has voted to officially recognize the Armenian genocide, and Turkey as the sole suspect. Then a Republican senator said that he will propose a bill to tax students for scholarships, which is obviously only going to lead to student protests (especially since student debt in the US is huge). Next, was this controversy: https://nypost.com/2019/10/29/deadspin-staffers-revolt-against-order-to-cover-just-sports/. I fully support the editorial staff and journalists at Deadspin. Then the same thing happened to a video game/electronics news organization. It’s an unusually un- Trumpy news day, and I am enjoying it
  7. Are you sure? I’d go to Denmark to see Copenhill, the little mermaid statue, the really cool museum, and to eat some Scandinavian treats; and they fly to my real tourist destination In all fairness, I’d love to visit Denmark and see some people I know there, and maybe try to find out about my families heritage (though I may have more luck Norway/Germany)
  8. I hate to continue this argument, but another thing I don’t understand is, why isn’t shooting a core sport? The CGF has ten core sports that must be included in every games. Lawn Bowls is a core sport (which does make sense since the sport is dominated by commonwealth nations), while shooting is not (which doesn’t make sense because shooting is arguably more popular and easier to watch/follow). It just seems odd that some core sports, like triathlon and squash, are sports that aren’t uniquely commonwealth sports, but are sports that the dominant countries (and historically more powerful countries of the commonwealth, cough *white countries* cough) excel at compared to India, Malaysia (with the exception of David obviously), Singapore, and other major medal table contenders. It seems like a big overtire from the CGF to leave shooting off that list. Especially since the crown jewel of the sport at the games is called the “Queen’s Prize” (she technically rules the entire commonwealth). Plus, it’s a uniquely commonwealth sport (at least the full bore rifle competition). It’s just odd. That’s not even mentioning the fact the core sports were reviewed in 2014, and triathlon was added over shooting! (probably because England and Australia were horrified that a host like South Africa might leave it off the program)
  9. I’d say there is now a 90% chance that Russia will be banned from the 2020 Summer Olympics. Fancy Bears attacked multiple anti-doping agencies (and was successful at getting some information). RUSADA was not attacked coincidently.
  10. Yes, the IPC has said that all sports have to be governed by real federations. The IPC will no longer have their own federations for sports after 2020.
  11. Good news for @heywoodu https://www.facebook.com/123052189231/posts/10157083285174232?sfns=mo
  12. I thought Oman didn’t rely too heavily on foreign players. Was I wrong? Yeah Netherlands or Thailand are probably the best “true” non-commonwealth nations. I’m always surprised the US isn’t better to be honest.
  13. Also, pity a thought . No Archery, No Shooting = 0 medals Guaranteed
  14. To be fair, India’s always had the short end of the commonwealth (and I’m talking in general here). Quite frankly I don’t understand why they just don’t leave the commonwealth. Shooting is almost definitely a commonwealth sport. It might not be historically, but it is one of the most widespread within the commonwealth now.
  15. I can’t wait for the FIG Horse Vaulting Championships, and the FIG Ice Gymnastics Four Continents Championships
  16. Oh great, who’d I miss
  17. It’s more the cultural/social impact of shooting being removed. No one would dare remove Athletics (Caribbean/African stronghold), or Gymnastics (Britain stronghold), or Swimming (Australia stronghold), or Rugby (White people everywhere + Fiji, Samoa, South Africa), but when people of color in Asia get good at a sport, it gets removed. I’m not saying that was Birmingham 2022’s intentions were at all, but the removal of shooting (for lack of venue) is a bit fishing considering the lengths their going to for the likes of cycling. I do personally think the removal was meant to give the English a medal table advantage. However, the situation is way overblown at this point.
  18. Well the problem for Chile’s government was their reaction. Young people protesting will always move the political needle (look at Russia (opposition protests are on the rise), Hong Kong, Chile, US (common sense gun control after the Parkland kids started their movement), etc.). Unfortunately, Child tried an indifferent response to the protest, and tried to treat young adults like 5 year old kids. The students set the wood for the fire, and the government essentially supplied the matches. I condemn burning public transport buildings down, but the government made its coffin.
  19. Vpn (I’ve heard that works for foreigners). I obviously don’t use one, and my family actually gets access to the East Coast channel, so I can watch the episodes the minute they come out. Highly recommend Watchmen, it’s confusing as hell at points though.
  20. HBO has been killing it lately! The end of GOT (which was a bit of a let down, but enjoyable nonetheless), Chernobyl, Succession, and now Watchmen. I can’t get enough of Watchmen! Honesty the one of the best shows on TV right now. It’s a Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Historical, Super-Hero, Murder Mystery; and its a masterpiece. There’s some many plot lines and so much social commentary. Brilliant pick up by HBO.
  21. If it’s a dry run of the Olympic format, there should only be six finalists. The World Championships format would be 8 finalists. I’d prefer 8, just to keep the competition interesting throughout.
  22. Both Oman’s and the UAE’s cricket teams have been getting steadily better the last few years. It will be interesting to see they continue that trend to become the best non-commonwealth nations. Though both were part of the commonwealth at one time I believe.
