IOC made correct decision.
Any country can have different stance on every topic but if you want to host anything, you can't pick who can or can't participate, simple as that. Participation is universal and must be based only on sport rules or conditions.
Same applies to USA or any other western country, just to be clear.

Whereas the women had a surprise medalist ( Melina Costanza !!!), the men's medalists were locked in heading to the final boulder...the only issue was what color the medals would be. Mejdi Schalk , Lee Dohyun , and Anraku Sorato had all topped the first three boulders. Medji was ahead on attempts (2 ahead), and Dohyun and Soratu were tied on attempts (Sorato ahead on count-back).
Mejdi was up first. He had two attempts to secure the gold. Almost made it the first time. Then...just like Oriane in the Women's Final...he rested a long time, giving him as much energy as he could to top it...except he didn't do it. He just had to sit and wait to see how Dohyun and Sorato did.
Dohyun was up next...he got zone, but not the top. So, the leaderboard was Mejdi, Dohyun, and Sorato going into the final climb.
Sorato was the final climber. Got the zone first try, cementing Dohyun's bronze. Rested. Waited. Then up he went...and he got it! After not making the Lead finals, this 18-year-old was determined and got the gold! You could tell as he held the final hold that he was letting it sink in, and there was so much relief and pride. Brought tears to my eyes! So, just like with Oriane, the gold was there for Mejdi, but had it taken at the last moment.
Sorato... #1 ranking for Boulder, #1 in World Cup, and now #1 World Champion!
Congrats to the medallists and to all. A great competition.

Monaco really is quite impressive in terms of sports. If I'm not mistaken both Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc and bobsledder Rudy Rinaldi are born and raised Monegasques, which with Langelotti already makes for a very easy three names in top-level sports for such a small group of people.

And if anyone is asking. He is actually from Monaco, born and raised there, son of the cyclist federation president.
There are only 9,000 or so Monaco nationals.

De_Gambassi reacted to NearPup in Winter Olympic Games French Alps 2030 Sports Programme
It's backcountry skiing. Which is quite normal in North America (with many resorts having fairly large "in bounds" backcountry areas), not sure how it is in Europe. I certainly know a lot of people who do it recreationally.
While a speed skiier did die in 1992, it was not while doing speed skiing. He was warming up using regular slalom skis on a regular piste and he colided with a snow cat.

I'm assuming if the organizers want to add a new discipline it would be added by the IOC the way disciplines are added normally, not through some weird additional sport process.
Going to do my thoughts on all of them:
Ski mountaineering makes a lot of sense, it will already be there in 2026. It feels like a natural addition to the winter Olympics and I would not be surprised if it becomes a permanent addition down the line Freeride seems like a great candidate. It has a very established world tour and the full support of the FIS. It's probably the most well developed winter sport / discipline that is not currently in the Olympics Telemark I am mixed on. I enjoy watching it and I'd be happy to have it included, but I wonder if it is perhaps too niche? Speed skiing is the least interesting sport on this list. It's both incredibly dangerous and incredibly boring. I actually think it has a great chance at being included in 2030 because of where the Olympics are being held, but I don't think it will come back very often Sled dog racing is a big old no for me Ice Cross I would be happy to see added. It is relatively well developed and it definitively plays well on TV 3x3 hockey is a no for me, it barely even exists yet Ice Climbing is a big yes for me, of all the sports not currently in the (pure) winter Olympics this is the one I most want to see added Cross country running / trail running is actually the single sport I most want to see added in the Winter Olympics. It would allow a ton of non-traditional countries to have a serious involvement in the winter Olympics, and cross country running is a real winter sport when done in wintery conditions Cyclocross would also be a good fit for the winter Olympics, and I would also like to see it added
If I were picking four out of that list, it would be: Ski mountaineering, cross country running, ice climbing and freeride.
What I expect (from most to least likely): Ski mountaineering, freeride, speed skiing, cross country running

De_Gambassi reacted to heywoodu in Winter Olympic Games French Alps 2030 Sports Programme
Cyclo-cross, much as I would like it, would be ridiculous. If you think Nordic combined isn't international, enjoy the regular 1-2-3-4-5-6's for Belgium in the top level races (and even worse in the women's races, but with the flag instead of the flag). Which is not odd, since Belgium is kind of the only country in the world where it's really, really a big deal (Flanders, actually, so only even half of one country), with maybe a few small patches here and there in the Netherlands, Spain, France, Czech Republic
Ice cross would be amazing to have at the Olympics, but not exactly an easy sport to just host somewhere given that you need quite a long track that is only useful for that one specific event.
-
De_Gambassi reacted to NearPup in Nordic Combined at the Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026
And even Baseball/Softball, which has a lot going against it (not gender equal, no MLB players and baseball has the highest roster size of any team sport), was *barely* removed (IIRC Softball was within a vote or two from being re-included immediately for 2012), and it's still been included 2/3 times since we've moved to having optional sports. And before that we have to go back all the way to 1920 to see an established (had been in a few Olympics in a row) sport be removed (tug of war).
Hopefully you're right.

If we learned anything from the 30 last years or so it is that is very difficult for IOC to actually cut anything from the program. Modern Pentathlon, Wrestling, Canoe slalom, Boxing, were all in the execution waiting room at some point but managed to survive. It seems the internal olympics dynamics basically prevent for a sport to ever be excluded.
Besides, the tensions around the winter program are a lot less heavy. IMO, Nordic Combined will survive.
