What a big unnecessary shit! Leander had already played 3 Olympic Games with a medal even before this man turned pro!

It is so shameful to see such a mediocre player deliberately blocking roads for a legend to represent his country in his record 7th Olympics.

Let him go with Saketh. They will crash out in first couple of rounds. AITA now should manage a tripartite invitational quota for Leander with Divij Sharan or some other player and teach this Bopanna guy a lesson!

Leander deserves to go to Olympics not only because he is a legend but also because he is performing as good as Bopanna on circuit. In fact better than him at times, at the age of 43!

This mediocre player is not blocking anyone's road to Olympics but legend is dependent on the mediocre player to reach Olympics. If you remember, the legend created such a big fuss at last Olympic demanding to be paired with the same mediocre player. Also, Leander is not performing at the same level as Bopanna on circuit. If that was the case, Leander would not have been 30 places behind Bopanna.

Leander has to share the blame for the way Indian tennis is divided in camps. Paes and Bhupathi are tremendous players who have always played better representing India (compared to ATP circuit) but their ego has taken its toll on the sport as well. Paes/Bhupathi along with their fathers made such a farce in last Olympics. The way both camps treated each other and Sania Mirza was really sad.

Bopanna knows that he has to partner Paes but he is just taking a leaf out of Paes' handbook and is ensuring that he gets to partner Hingis and not Paes. (IMHO for Mixed Doubles, Mirza should have complete freedom to chose her partner. She has earned it).

I have not been able to make sense of the no-trial policy. Surely a trial helps decide who among the two wrestlers is better and helps us send the best representative to the Olympics. Why is it such a bad thing that the wrestling federation does not want to consider it? Is it very damaging physically? Surely mental toughness should increase post a trial as then the wrestler should be more confident.

Can anyone help me understand?

    1) Take the case of archery where all selections are done with trials. Some time back, Deepika missed a lot of time on international circuit as she failed in trials. Her replacements didnt do well and India was able to qualify for Rio only after Deepika came back.

    2) In Shooting, almost all the top shooters have repeatedly underscored that there is a big difference in scoring high in trials and shooting in big competitions. Hence, while selecting team, only trial scores should not be considered.

    3) Fear of outrage. Imagine the media/fan outrage if there are trials and some relatively unknown wrestler defeats Yogeshwar Dutt in that trial.

Having said this, I personally believe, that as our bench strength improves, we should move towards trials. But, the rule should be clear before qualification process starts.

    P V Sindhu beat Akane Yamaguchi 21-11 21-18

    India leads 2-0

Our best players have done it. Now comes the toughest part

Just like last Uber Cup Semis. Hopefully this time result would be different:fingers:

Why do you feel so sure....................... what is the combinational criteria for selection ................ I am not able to find any detailed list of which doubles pair will be there in tennis ????

There is no danger of Mirza dropping out of top 10, so we are assured of a pair in WD.

For doubles, NOC can choose any two players as a pair. Combined ranking of the pair is equal to sum of their individual rankings (better ranking between MS and MD is used for each individual). Pairs win quota based on this combined ranking.

There is no chance for second pair in MD as apart from Bopanna no one is ranked high enough. Bopanna/Paes might also be on edge of qualification if both of them dont do well in French Open.

If Bopanna manages to reach top 10, he can chose Bhupathi instead of Paes but IMHO it would be a case of cutting one's nose to spite the face.

Also, its next to impossible to find any reliable simulation rankings for doubles as there are just too many combinations

Yes confirmed Ravindra Khatri 85 Kgs greco and babita have won a quota  WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  ...source authentocated

    https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/adjustments-to-olympic-qualifiers-announced

This should be a lesson to others to participate in repechage even if there is no quota for third place.

Also, lets see if UWW allows us to send Babita to Olympics or not.

In Tennis, any chance of a singles player sneeking in too, or somehow can we have 2 men's doubles teams?

For singles, Yuki would need a large number of withdrawals and/or good performance at French Open to rise 50 odd places to qualify. Not sure about Wild cards.

To be honest, I think Paes/Bopanna are on the edge of qualification themselves. Hopefully, Bopanna would improve his ranking and enter top 10 to win the quota directly. No chance for second pair in MD

How silly is this mistake.... They did it purposely or it was mistake from officials.....This is actually a huge shame

What bullshit. Athletes forfeiting useless matches in contact sports is pretty common. I remember in last Olympics qualifications, there were a large number of forfeits in gold medal matches.

Also, if UWW wanted to stamp this practice out, it should have clarified before the tournament. And if they want to take action against Phogat sisters, place them under suspension/ban instead of threatening India with disqualification if they are selected.

According to Pullela Gopichand, 7 players will get Rio Olympics quota in Badminton. Let's see how far Gopi's prediction materializes.

With just a week left, his 'prediction' is going to be 100% true. Srikanth, Saina, Sindhu, Attri/Reddy and Gutta/Ponappa are going to qualify for Rio.

Technically, India can send Jayaram, Kashyap or Prannoy (probably couple more) in place of Srikanth as well but dont think that would happen barring injury.

  10. Rowing federation has screwed up badly. Won't be surprised if we fail to qualify even a single rower for Olympics with easier qualification format. They will blame Army for not sending best rowers but won't tell why no female rowers are being sent to qualification tournament. RFI wants Army to train rowers year round and then cribs when Army coaches want some say in selection process.

Sawarn's performance in London raised hopes but last Asian games were two steps back and now it is all over.

It's very tough.. Men's Team is ranked 21st.. 9 highest rank teams after the continental quotas (1 each for 5 continents) & host nation will go through.. So I don't think we can. Australia who is ranked 57th got through continental quota. So that again push India further down

No African and North American team is above us, so that is also problematic. But, it is closer as IIRC, team quotas will be allocated to teams with 2 qualified athletes first. So, if some team above us qualifies only one athlete, then we are ahead of them for team qualification.

Mouma is really unlucky to get the korean....

There are 6 quotas to be won in second stage. 4 winners from each draw should qualify. Last 2 spots should go to repechage. Mouma has a realistic chance of winning a quota in that. By my calculations, Mouma is 5th highest ranked player in second stage (behind North Koreans and Thais)

Soumyajit Ghosh gets the men's Quota in the TT Asian qualifying Tournament.....Sharath now need to get the quota through the ranking to get the 2nd quota for India....

Any clarification on tiebreaker for women's section?

Rowing- Starts 23rd April - Asian regatta - Almost surefire chance for single sculls male , decent chances for lightweight double sculls men , very long shot womens single sculls

In Rowing, a NOC can qualify only crew per gender at continental qualifiers, so no chance for lightweight double sculls men and hopefully decent chance for a spot in women's section

  15. Top 36 ranked singles players qualify for Olympics. Country can qualify a maximum of 2 players in one event, provided both are in top 16. Other nations can qualify only one player in singles. Each continent is assured of one athlete in each event

For doubles, it is top 16 pairs qualify for Olympics and both pair need to be in top 8. Each conticontinent is assured of one pair in each event, provided they are in top 50.

A nation can use continental quota only twice. You can check the latest situation in the rankings shared by me previously
