Btw, just missed this point, there are no B Standards in Athletics this time, all have qualified in A standard only.

In a way there is. There is target quota for each event in athletics. If enough athletes don't get A standards then best ranked athletes will be invited to Olympics. At present, in the events where Indians are close to A standard, target quota has been reached so require A standard only.

Sorry to say we have been participating in large numbers in athletics for such a long time. What has changed? A few stars come up from time to time but nothing changes. I don't think anyone should be sent unless they cross the A qualification mark. Look at shooting wrestling even badminton. Boxing. There our Olympians are mostly true competitors pushing for medals. Only few of them will win but most have potential too. That has to be differentiated from the no hopers in athletics table tennis etc where we have been participating for a long time without anything tangible. This nehruvian idea of participation is better than winning has led us here. So many nations have much smaller contingents and are so much poorer than us still win more medals. For a lowdown on that - check out the GDP based medal tally.

I have mixed feelings about restricting participation. When AFI had our own qualification standard for CWG and Asian Games, I had opposed the move as I believe we need to encourage more participation, with an aim of better performance in future. But have to admit, situation has indeed improved since then. This time all of our athletes (17) are qualifying with A standards.

Agree about need for change in mentality.

except these there are deepa in gymnestic 1 in weightlifting an d 1-2 in  tennis also but there are no hope of 3 medal in bedimnton ..you can say 2 but 3 impossible

These are medal prospects not predictions. We should win 1 medal for every 3-4 prospects. So, with only 20-25 medal prospects we would need extraordinary performance to win 10 medals.

Not sure any of those quotas are coming to India even if the ban comes through. Rules are not clear but seems like quotas will just be allocated to countries not already qualified. But its unclear, does anybody have a different interpretation ???

    http://www.iwf.net/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2014/05/2014-05-28-Rio-2016-Qualification-System-FINAL-Weightlifting-EN.pdf

If RUS/KAZ/BLR are banned from Olympics (instead of just removing x lifters from final tally) then their lifters will be removed from all Olympic qualification tournaments. This would mean that Combined ranking will be recalculated without lifters from these countries. IWF did the same thing when a) Brazil failed to win a quota based on combined ranking and had to use Host Quota and b) when they banned Bulgaria from Rio Olympics.

If they follow the same path that was used in Bulgaria's case, then all of their points from qualification period would be removed and completly new rankings would be made. What an epic mess that would be!

and after that new rankings for continental qualifiers without nations replacing these 3 nations in Combined list

:yes...thanks .............. I was building castles in the sky thinking it will trickle down to the world championship list ( ie to India ) .......but from what you say that will mean 11 new nations will get one weightlifter each .....hope some of the oceanian weightlifters get a chance :d

If Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia are banned, then we may get second quota. We are third in line but someone below us might get ahead as majority of lifters from these 3 nations are in higher weight classes and our points are from lower weight classes. But still :fingers:

His plea about what ??? There are qualifying tournaments still left..if he wants to compete he can...ask for wild card may be when he tries and loses. At the moment he may not even be the best in India. He may have to have a trial with Vikas or Sumit to determine who is better - Mary has won her trials...he cant ask for a free ride to the olympics when he hasn't even competed in a single qualification event..

And sorry, but how many world titles does Vijender have ??

Really really saddened by this statement...

Completely agree. After London Olympics, instead of focusing on boxing, he was busy doing movies and Roadies and then out of the blue became pro just a year before Olympics. If he was so keen about Olympics, why didn't he wait for a year or join the AIBA Pro Boxing league? And now when Vikas and Sumit are very close to Olympic qualification why is he needlessly creating a controversy. I didnt expect this from him. I thought if Vikas and/or Sumit fails to win quota here, he may try to participate in the last qualifying tournament and if needed ask for a trial against Vikas but this statement about bias against him is just sad.

Yes, but the 7s were the last arrows. I didn't mean to say that we lost due to the last archer but there seems to be some mental block when it comes to the last shot. Bombayla scored 29/30 on her first arrow each set while her second shot in each set - which was also the last shot of the team - fetched only 23/30. Similar was the case day before in the men's team qualifiers for Rio. Probably they could work on their mental toughness or if one of the other 2 archers tends to perform well under the immense pressure of the last shot, then we should look to change the order in which they shoot.

Didnt watch today's matches or the men's team qualifiers, so don't know for certain but I think it could be also be a case of archers taking too much time for first 5 shots and hence the last archer rushing the shot resulting in low score.

    yes I currently feel

    Australia is ahead clearly

Then India , Germany, GBR , Belgium , ARG  and NED  are in a close group in second position and anyone can beat anyone in any situation with peculiar patterns like India loses to bel often but beats GB most often so the quarters are going to be a any ones game who reaches the semis ( for India in the group  the only thing may avoid lowest place as you may face AUS then int he QTRs )  ............... The rest of 12 like IRL , CAN , SPN , NZL , BRA will make up the numbers only and one may make the quarters ....................

India doesnt beat GB often, in fact if I remember when we defeated them last year, it was after a gap of 15+ years

    Manoj Kumar  first round 29-28.

    Second round 27-30 and

    Third Round 29-28

Is he win 2-1 or lost 85-86

    I think he won 2-1.

    Pls confirm

Each judge gives a score to each round: 10-9 being the default, 10-8 or even 10-7 only in case of too much domination and/or knockouts/warning. At the end of three rounds, each judge's scores are added up. The boxer with more judges giving him victory wins the bout. Whether a judge gives you 30-24 or 29-28 it doesnt matter. So, in this case Manoj Kumar won 2-1 as two judges thought he was the better boxer while one judge thought otherwise.

  12. Great Britain scored 2 goals in dying moments to draw their match against Belgium. This sent Indian team into the finals against Australia. This is our first ever final appearance in Champions Trophy.

Also, this is our fourth major medal in 2 years. CWG Silver, Asian Games Gold, HWL Bronze and now Champions Trophy. Plus Silver and Bronze at Azlan Shah. :champion:

So his pathetic performance, resulting in a loss to Brazil was ignored right, for today, what were the rules can an archer be replaced in the Qtr final stage after the 1st round, coz he tried his best to ensure we loose in the 1st round itself, anybody?

Are you suggesting that he was shooting badly on purpose? Match-fixing?

Or might be Champia performed better than Rahul in the morning practice sessions in front of the coach in the current wind conditions.

If you recall, someone had quoted team official and told about India's decision to replace Rahul with Mangal on Monday evening itself. Also, Mangal had participated in the normal team event as well. So, once again nothing to do with today's condition.

In qualification, gap between Mangal and Rahul was 5 shots and Mangal had shot much better in 2nd series compared to 1st. So, maybe team thought that Mangal will bounce back. Also, its not like Rahul had a spectacular performance in qualification or Individual events.

  15. 1 minute ago, Sanjib said:

I do not understand the decision of not using Rahul in this crucial event, Champia already showed his form in the other events.

Champia won the individual quota, so thinking might have been

    1) no controversy if team won quota

    2) Champia just had a bad day in qualifiers and would bounce back in team event

He is there with the team so maybe he is right. Also aren't the no. of 10s taken into consideration in case of tie? Because there were 2 more ties - Finland and Japan but Finland have more 10s so they are placed higher same with Turkey and Thailand.

So if there is no tie breaker in this case India will still be top seeded as we will have one 10 more than Mexico with Champia in

Seems you are right. :yes Lets wait and see.

  17. 40 minutes ago, Smit said:

Yes that was what I was told by a guy from Archery Association of India. He said it is possible to change team and swap players. He also claimed that Mangal is in better form than Rahul

I am still not sure about that. Maybe that guy is misinformed. Because if we chose Mangal instead of Rahul, our team score should be reduced by 5 which would leave us tied with Mexico for first place and would result in tie break shoot out.

Considering that top half is much easier compared to bottom half, IMO it is not a risk worth taking. As for team for Olympics is concerned, lets wait for the team to win quota first and then we (including AAI) can discuss that.

There is no chance of top 4. I have done the calculations. There are only 2 grand prix gold tournaments between now and Rio, and no super series. Only if Saina wins Australian open and wins BOTH of them, and Okuhara and Intanon either dont play or do badly, can Saina enter top 4.

However, the draw of the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix Gold tournament is already out and Saina is not in it. Not 100% sure but don't think she can enter now. Only way Saina can get to top 4 seeds in Rio is if China pick Shixian over Yihan and Saina reaches world no. 5.

WS has a very strong field this time around. There is no clear favourite. In the last year or so, Marin, Okuhara, Intanon all have had excellent runs. Saina and Chinese have been consistently been near the top throughout the Olympic cycle. So, I consider these six as group 1A. Ideally, medals should come from this group only but Koreans, Tai Tzu, Yamaguchi and Sindhu (group 1) are more than capable of multiple upsets and winning a medal. So, with so many top players, more than seeding, draw is important to avoid unfavourable matchups (like Saina vs Tai Tzu)
