Mixed championships for Greece so far. Bourmpou/Fragkou into the final in the women's pair, but they have not looked convincing at all. I'd be shocked if they won a medal, which is disappointing as Bourmpou won bronze at the European Championships at the same boat class in 2020 as a 19 year old. Still, it was good for them to win the World U23 title this year and I'm sure they'll win the European U23 title in a few weeks' time. Fitsiou into the final in the women's lightweight single. I don't expect a medal from her but this is her biggest final ever. Anastasiadou competing in the women's single (!!!) after her partner Kontou had Covid and they had to pull out of the lightweight double. I'm not sure why they didn't just move Fitsiou to the lightweight double (as her and Anastasiadou have competed together in the past) or put Anastasiadou in the lightweight single (where she would 99% win a medal) and make Fitsiou go in the single (as she probably won't win a medal anyways). However, Anastasiadou is doing great, she won her heat defeating Gmelin and Foester which is really impressive considering she is only 20 yo and a lightweight rower. Dalidou/Natsioula had to withdraw from the women's double because they got Covid. I was curious to see how they'd do at this level after winning the European juniors and World juniors and setting a World junior record. I guess we'll have to wait until next year, unless we put them in the World Championships but I guess the European U23s would be more likely (if they can recover by then). Ntouskos won his heat in the men's single. It is his first big regatta since winning gold in Tokyo (he was supposed to compete in one of the World Cup events but he got Covid). The goal for him should be to just win a medal. His gold in Tokyo is his only senior medal so far, so it would be good to just get on the podium especially since he took a break after Tokyo so I had doubts as to his condition/form. Papakonstantinou won his heat in the men's lightweight single by 13+ seconds. He'll definitely make the final and is a good chance for a medal. He disappeared a little after his U23 success, so I'm happy to see him back and doing well. Kalandaridis/Palaiopanos finished 2nd in their heat in the men's double and advanced to the semifinal. I think the goal should be to make the final and I believe they will. A medal may be out of reach but both are still relatively young and the men's double is a very competitive event so no shame in that. Disappointed to not see Stergiakas on this team after he came back to the sport last year and won gold with Palaiopanos in the men's double at the World U23s. I guess he disappeared again...

Our U18 women's team might make history at the European Championships (Division A). We won our group and then lost in the round of 16 and in the 9-16 classification game, so now we have to play the 13-16 classification games. If we end up being one of the three teams relegated (very likely at this point), I wonder if we will be the first team to ever get relegated at a European Championships after winning the group. Surely it has to be a first, especially as the format changed a few years ago and prior to that this was not possible. What an incredible achievement for our girls

It's Greece vs USA in the final, we already beat them 15-14 in the group stage. Whoever wins will be the first country to ever win this tournament twice (we won the inaugural tournament in 2012).

We are in the final! We beat Hungary 10-9. We led 10-5 and choked but we were able to hold on in the end for the win.

Athletics WA Under 20 World Championships 2022

In the end it was a decent Championships for us. One gold and one silver, more or less what we expected. Also two fourth place finishes (are we the new Canada? ). Our highlights (top 8 finishers) : Korakidis winning gold in the men's hammer with a WL was great, although it's too bad Polychroniou finished 4th. I really wanted both on the podium. If not for the Finnish guy, all three medalists would've had the same national anthem Filippidou silver in the women's discus with a SB was nice after her struggles this year. Hopefully next year she can get a new PB again because her progress stalled and Paris is looking unlikely for her at this point. Pavlidis 4th in the men's discus after breaking the U20NR twice, wow! I thought Bouzakis was our contender in that event but he didn't even make the final. Emmanouilidou 5th in the women's 200. I think if the conditions were better she would've had another U20NR. Her finishing 11th in the 100 was also good. I can't remember the last time we had a female sprinter this promising, probably not since Thanou. It's too bad there was no European U20 this year, she would've won gold in the 200! Kassou 8th in 3000 and 9th in 5000, also really good as we don't normally do well in these distance events. If we had a European U20 this year, she would've won medals. Rapti 8th in the women's triple jump is decent, but her progress seems to have stalled the last two years as she's barely improved her PB. She's still only 18, but she had 12.87 in 2020, 12.96 in 2021, and 13.11 in 2022. She needs a big improvement next year, something like 13.50. -

Now that @PHI2019 confirmed it's official (), Korakidis winning gold in the men's hammer with a WL is surely the highlight of the day for . I really wanted both of our guys to get on the podium, but Polychroniou lost it right at the end and got 4th Emmanouilidou was the other highlight of the day. After already having the U20NR of 23.41, she had 23.43 in the heats and then 23.20 in the semifinals . I don't think she can win a medal but making the final is already a huge achievement for her, it's too bad there was no U20 Europeans this year as she surely would've won a medal there . The goal for her in the final should be just to improve the U20NR one last time. Dragomirova 12th in the heptathlon was respectable, but her results are far too inconsistent. She needs to improve a lot in the track events. She was 20/20 in the 800 (7 seconds behind the 19th place finisher)....She is great in the field events although in the past she did much better in the long jump. Pomaski (Tentoglou's coach) said that he could've made her a 7m+ long jumper but she chose to do combined events instead. Her long jump PB is 6.44 from 2019 when she was 16 yo. She has regressed since then (as seen with 5.98 from today being her SB). Her long jump, 200, and 800 PBs are from 2019. At this age that is unacceptable, she needs to be improving... Triantafyllou finished a disappointing 12th in the women's pole vault, but I never expected her to win a medal. Maybe in 2024 though Deliu 35th in the women's 100 hurdles. Whatever. -

Can someone explain what is going on with the men's hammer throw? Korakidis threw 79.11 (WL), then it was later changed to a foul and he finished in 4th. Now on the World Athletics site, the official results say he won with 79.11? -

The weather ruined the evening but now I am back to see some results... SILVER medal for Filippidou in the women's discus! Our first medal in Cali so far, and she did it with a big SB and her second best throw of her career. Really nice to see after her season was very disappointing until now! Dragomirova 15th in the heptathlon after 4 events. She had SBs in the high jump and 200m, worst result of her career in 100 hurdles, and a mediocre shot put result (she placed 2nd in it but that is her main event where she also qualified in, so I expected a bigger throw). Bertsima and Lyri crashed out in the women's long jump qualifying. Not surprising at all. Lyri is only 16, so 6.01 is by no means a bad result, third best in her career actually (including indoors). Rapti obviously would've done better than these two, but she was not selected as she will also be in the triple jump. Can't complain about Mitsiouli either, we knew there was no chance she'd make the 400 hurdles final, but her time of 59.97 today was the second best in her career. Emmanouilidou 11th in the 100m with 11.51 (=second best of her career). So I guess she won't break Thanou's U20NR after all (this is probably her last competition of the year with the exception of the European Championships in Munich where she will only run in the 4x100 relay). However she is also competing in the 200m here, where she already holds the U20NR and barely competed at that distance this year, so I think she has plenty of room to make a new U20NR. Triantafyllou didn't get to compete as the women's pole vault final was moved to tomorrow. -

Greece not even sending a team. With our coasts, lakes and rivers, we should really try to do better at this sport. Most of our rowers are from northern Greece, I wish we would try to develop this sport in southern Greece (as there aren't really many rowing clubs there outside of the Athens area and a few islands). It's a wasted opportunity. -

Thanks for this. So I guess our athletics federation is not as stupid as I thought Though Florou-Dimitriadou still should've been selected, anyone with a brain can see that her results are way more consistent than the other two. -

Well, Chasos finished 13th and narrowly missed out on the men's high jump final . He passed 2.00 and 2.04 but failed at 2.08. He had 2.19 indoors and 2.12 outdoors this year, so it's quite disappointing that he wasn't able to do better and at least make the final. Korakidis and Polychroniou both made the men's hammer final and will be contending for medals hopefully Emmanouilidou had 11.55 which was enough to finish 2nd in her heat and 12th overall. She was in lane 8 and the wind was bad. She will probably need a U20NR in the semifinals in order to make the final. I'd love to see her do it. Looking forward to that! Roumtsios was close to his PB and Stamatonikolos...well at least he made the final with a PB in the qualifying (he finished 12th in the final) Mitsiouli making the semifinals in the women's 400 hurdles was a pleasant surprise. She did it with the second best time of her career, hopefully she can make a PB in the semifinals because we know she won't make the final. It's too bad Chatzipourgani has been MIA, she was our big talent from this age group in 400 hurdles. She had 59.01 in 2020 but barely competed in 2021 and hasn't competed at all in 2022. I really thought she would be under 58 seconds by now... Tomorrow is another day...would like for our long jump girls to have get new PBs, I don't know if they are capable of making the finals. PB from Mitsiouli (w 400 hurdles) and for Emmanouilidou (w 100) to make the final with a U20NR. We also have Filippidou in the women's discus final and Triantafyllou in the women's pole vault final. And Dragomirova in the heptathlon. All 7 of our athletes tomorrow are women. Filippidou prob our first real chance for a medal. -

Mixed Day 1 for Greece: Dragomirova was disappointing in the women's shot put, but hopefully she can do better in the heptathlon. Andreadi also disappointing in the women's shot put. Stamatonikolos into men's long jump final with PB Kallimogianni disappointing in the women's 3000 steeplechase. Generally she has been very disappointing in 2022. She's 17 and still has her PB from last year which is not good, it shows she is not developing/improving as she should be. Filippidou 2nd in the women's discus with a SB, she might have a chance at a medal here Roumtsios into the 110 hurdles semis with a big PB Triantafyllou barely made the women's pole vault final and Retsa just missed out. Another reason why Florou-Dimitriadou should've gone, she is much more consistent (in addition to having the bigger SB)... Kassou with an impressive 8th place finish in the women's 3000, 3rd place of the Europeans Mavrodontis very disappointing in the men's shot put. Day 2 will be interesting. I expect Chasos to qualify for the men's high jump final, and both of our guys (Korakidis and Polychroniou) to qualify for the men's hammer throw final. Also hoping for a new U20NR from Emmanouilidou in the women's 100 (her PB of 11.44 is so close to Thanou's U20NR of 11.43). It would be nice to see at least one of Roumtsios/Stamatonikolos get another PB after they both did so today. -

Same with us, we only have promising female walkers. I think part of it has to do with the sport being seen as a "women's sport" in Greece also... We did have a promising young man, but he got cancer a few years ago so obviously he has other issues in his life and is not competing these days... -

It often happens for us in these junior competitions, but for the Olympics probably not since 2004. I have a feeling we will have issues with the women's race walk for Paris, especially if we can't qualify in the mixed 35km event (we only have one good man but many good women, some of them will miss out and be very unhappy). -

Never say never, don't forget that there are opportunities in the single sculls (and lightweight double sculls) for countries who haven't qualified more than 1 boat after the World Championships. The level in the European qualifying regatta was not very high last year.
