  1. TV production for this is very good, certainly heads and solders better than the US or Canadian trials for most winter sports (with the exception of the Curling trials for Canada - which is arguably a better event than the Olympic tournament - and the figure skating trials for the US).
  2. Isn't she already qualified for the mass start? She is already number 8 on the list, and 10 go.
  3. Are they going to make Bergsma a reserve again?
  4. My guess is that the other continental quotas will he given out as part of the world surfing games or the tour.
  5. The Netherlands is not going to be anywhere it's once in a generation 2014 performance. Japan is currently the strongest nation on the women's side and will probably win 3 golds (500, 1000, 1500 and team pursuit) and the men's team, while still the best in the world, isn't as dominant as it was in 2014. I'll go on a limb here and say that I'm going to be very surprised if the Dutch get a sweep.
  6. Logo's whatever. It's not really any worse than any of the recent logos. At this point I feel like the "look of the games" maters a lot more. Beijing 2008 had a meh logo but a great look, hopefully 2022 will be the same.
  7. Ya. I was hoping he wasn’t involved in all this. I guess the silver lining for me is that Canada is going to get it’s first luge medal, though under the worst of circumstances.
  8. Albert Demtschenko and Tatyana Ivanova have been found guilty of doping and disqualified. This means Russia will lose it’s men’s singles and team relay silvers. Vancouver 2010 medalists Nikita Kryukov and Ivan Skobrev have also been found guilty of doping (but will not lose their 2010 medals).
  9. Even if the suspension isnlifted during the Olympics the medals won under OAR will not count as “Russian” for record keeping purposes.
  10. It currently is for alpine skiing. In snowboarding the top 16 from each course qualifies for the second preliminary round, and the top 16 combined times from both courses make it through.
  11. They could just limit the number of qualifiers to 16 like in alpine snowboarding...
  12. I just don’t understand why they have two runs for the Ro32 but only one rum afterwards...
  13. Ya, I think Anthony Joshua deserved that one. This wasn't even that good a year by Mo's standards.
  14. Really unfortunate situation with him having to miss out on the Davis Cup and the Olympics with Great Britain. It’s pretty clear that it’s the country he wanted to play for.
  15. I think it’s like that because in practice the big countries qualify all the sleds they want up to the quota limit. In bobsleigh / skeleton the comentators are much more aware of how qualification works because very few countries can have the max quota.
  16. The max quota is just an upper bound, a lot of (most?) NOCs won’t use them all.
  17. ISU announced the qualification standings for speed skating, baring any reallocation or issues with the 180 athlete quota. Keep in mind most countries won't use their maximum quota due to athletes competing in multiple events. The Netherlands is the only country with the maximum number of quotas in every event. Canada also has the maximum number of athlete quota. 18. I believe the technical term is “slap on the wrist”.
  19. More than that, if I remember correctly they started to investigate Šmigun-Vähi way back in late 2013/early 2014.
  20. The IOC has announced that there where no positive tests from the Turin 2006 re-tests, which means Kristina Šmigun-Vähi will not be stripped of her medals.
  21. Ya, I agree. I’ll believe he can beat Kramer in a championship when I see it.
  22. Kevin Koe, Marc Kennedy, Brent Laing, Ben Hebert and (presumably) Scott Pfeifer will represent Canada in men's curling at the 2018 Olympics.
  23. I mean, it depends which team shows up. The Netherlands pursuit team has looked like amateurs in two of the three events. FWIW I think Koen Verweij is a heavy favorite since Yuskov and Kulizhnikov probably won't be allowed to compete (even though Yuskov's doping ban was kinda BS).
  24. Man has Ted-Jan ever improved over the past couple years. World record holder in both the 5000 and the 10000, just incredible. Speed Skating Canada sure is lucky his dad happened to have been born in New Brunswick xD
