  2. How many golds out of that? In my book, around 5-7 (canoe/kayak 2-3, swimming 2-3, fencing 0-2, plus any surprises or other sports I'm not familiar with - such as I don't know how strong the mentioned ppl are in Sailing) All in all I think what the HOC person (secretary general or whatever) said the other day is more or less accurate : less golds than Rio and London but more than Beijing
  3. Maybe you read this interview with him (in Hungarian): http://www.nemzetisport.hu/kajak_kenu/kajak-kenu-vb-a-hires-tongai-olimpikon-szegeden-is-elindult-2717665 Here he says that in his childhood he used to fish using a canoe but did competitive type kayaking for the first time 6 days (!) before the championship began (here in Szeged with a Talent programme of the ICF)
  4. Hi Admittedly I am lost with this reallocation system but Hungarian media wrote this yesterday about Dora Lucz (k-1 200): https://www.origo.hu/sport/egyeni/20190824-kajak-kenu-vb-szeged-lucz-dora-olimpiai-kvota.html (in Hungarian) Basically, they qoute the national team coach, Csaba Huettner, who says that in reallocations the 2- and 4- boats and longer distances are prioritised and to his knowledge there will be no reallocation this time in favour of K-1 200 competitors (Lucz in this case) He adds that in his estimation they might be about 10 reallocations in women's kayak (the whole quali not only the Szeged Wch) so there might be ample opportunity for Lucz to qualify later.
  5. Yes this is the case, so this is the first-ever Athletics world title, both indoor and outdoor
  6. First-ever world title in Athletics for Hungary! Wohoooo!
  7. First of all, I enjoyed this Games too, even though I was not able to follow as intensively as the last one. For the scheduling issues, let me point out, not really the Koreans are to blame here (from an European perspective), apart from having a 8 hours timezone difference, haha, but rather the IOC and their buddies at NBC&NBC Universal Fortunately Eurosport Player and the re-watch feature of my cable TV provided me enough means to catch up (do not really do anything on public transport, so it was a good way to spend the time watching re-runs of Olympic events) Favorite moments (some of): - Hungary gold (even though I did not follow it live, as I didn't want to be disappointed if we dont win - I'am already trained on this from summer olympic canoe-kayak runs, haha :D) - The amazing final of mens halfpipe at snowboard (which I was able to watch live) + the slopestyle from mens snowboard - Some of the luge races (like Loch flop in the last meters of the race or surprising Gough win) - LEDECKA - Canada-USA and Sweden-USA curling (even though I do not watch this sport generally) Disappointments: - The Liu's were so unlucky in the individual short track events - Latvia was also short of luck, particularly in bobsleigh Upsets: - Most of them were written down already, so just only one: LEDECKA
  8. Disappointing results so far for ITA, LAT and RUS. Last chance tomorrow in the relay's. I personally will support LATVIJA for sure.
  9. Yeah, I think she competed for Romania before.
  10. Makes sense after all. On the other hand: Gough ! And Stramaturaru = 7: . This is as big as we had in 2014, when a Hungarian alpine skier finished 6th!
  11. In case of S Korea, they are way better in skeleton and bobsleigh than in luge (this year Yun Sungbin won the Skeleton WC, and he was 2nd place in the 2 years before, and in 2015-16 they won the 2-man bob, with being 3rd place in WC in 2016-17). With all this they might put the complex to good use, depends on also the willingness of FIL and FIBT to organize World Cup events there Sochi disappeared rather quickly from Luge WC programme, only after 2 seasons post 2014, dont know if it was because of the local organizers or the intl federation or both.
  12. The Latvian team, according to kamanas.lv (courtesy of Google translate) Singles: Inārs Kivlenieks, Kristers Aparjods, Artūrs Dārznieks // Elīza Cauce, Ulla Zirne, Kendija Aparjode Doubles: Andris Šics, Juris Šics, Oskars Gudramovičs, Pēteris Kalniņš (note: special characters in the original)
  13. According to the Hungarian article: Short track: Bácskai Sára Luca, Heidum Bernadett, Jászapáti Petra, Keszler Andrea, Kónya Zsófia, Burján Csaba, Knoch Viktor, Liu Shaoang, Liu Shaolin Sándor, Oláh Bence (10) Speed skating: Nagy Konrád Figure skating: Tóth Ivett Alpine skiing: Hozmann Szonja + 1 from the men, to be determined by the Ski federation this week (either Samsal Dalibor, Kékesi Márton or Nagy Bence) Cross country: Kónya Ádám, Szőcs Emőke
  14. Dont know if it was posted earlier: Hungarian team: 16, according to Hungary"s M4 Sport. Most of it is in short track speed skating (in which they have a real medal chance for the first time in 30+ years, all WOG sports considered...)
  15. Hope they will do more races in Lillehammer in the future. More variance in the top3 nationalities is more than welcome ::D Hopefully one day Formula 1 will also look like this race. Otherwise it is like a normal luge race: Germany-Germany-Germany-Germany (errr, Mercedes-Mercedes-Mercedes-Mercedes :D)
  16. You have a point, but in such a small sport this cannot be avoided entirely. In order to completely avoid conflict of interest for example, in case of Germany, Norbert Loch would be forced to exclude Felix Loch from his team which is kind of counter-productive Other route is what the Americans have done, that is, make the selection dependent in 100% on results at X world cup races or a separate national selection race. Agree with heywoodu on Kastlunger though.
  17. I recommend we could start put together the team rosters for major Luge nations. What I have for the moment: Italy was already mentioned here USA Singles: West, Mazdzer, Morris (M) // Britcher, Hamlin, Sweeney (W) Doubles: Mortensen/Terdiman, Krewson/Sherk Canada S: Edney, Malik, Watts (M) // Gough, Apshkrum, McRae (W) D: Walker / Snith Austria S: Egger, W. Kindl, X (M, last to be decided after Lillehammer) // Prock, Platzer, Egle (W) D: Penz/Fischler, Steu/Koller Germany S: Loch, Langenhan, Ludwig (M) // Geisenberger, Eitberger, Huefner (W) D: Eggert/Benecken, Wendl/Arlt Could anyone put here some info on Latvia? Did not find anything recent on their federation site, even in Latvian Any info on the composition of the Russia / OAR team? One can know for sure that T. Ivanova will not be included due to her Olympic ban, but nothing else
  18. As per fil-luge.org: "Berchtesgaden (RWH). The International Luge Federation (FIL) has been informed by Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee about the decision in the proceedings against Tatyana Ivanova and Albert Demchenko. The Anti-Doping Commission of the FIL will contemporary deliberate in a hearing the further process. This was published by the FIL office on December 23 in Berchtesgaden." http://www.fil-luge.org/en/news/anti-doping-commission-of-the-fil-to-deliberate You are right about A. Demchenko, if "convicted" by FIL, he might be banned as a coach from World Cup as well.
  19. Hi, First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone! Would like to ask about the recent IOC decision, where more Russian athletes, among them lugers, were sanctioned: https://www.olympic.org/news/ioc-sanctions-11-russian-athletes-as-part-of-oswald-commission-findings - Lugers Tatyana IVANOVA and Albert DEMCHENKO, silver medallists in Sochi 2014 They have been banned from all Olympic Games subsequent to Sochi 2014. Obviously, in practice this does not affect Albert Demchenko, who is no longer active (as an athlete) But what about Ivanova? Is she banned also from World Cup competitions subsequent to this decision, or only from Olympics?
  20. I would agree with cutting the rhytmic gimnastics and synchro swimming based on the reasons mentioned above. As regards to boxing, wrestling and weightlifting: here the problem is not that those sports are there but the way their olympic competitions are run which simply compromises their integrity. Take for example boxing: I totally agree with the poster who said that a final warning should be sent to AIBA to tackle the allegations of manipulation, corruption and so on. Same with weightlifting but the issue of doping. On wrestling: in many matches of this Olympics the refereeing was simply scandalous. I could name at least for countries which were systematically disadvantaged on this way. Also it is a joke that matches are decided by cautions given at random or by sport diplomatic considerations. If there is a tie there should be e.g. extra time to decide the match. In sum: after the decision the exclude wrestling was reversed in 2013, the intl' federation should now understand that the Olympics is not a place for sport diplomatic point scoring or advancement of special interests as it undermines the rationale of "getting back" wrestling despite the original IOC decision. In case of sports whose popularity is totally uneven by geographic regions (like rugby, field hockey, water polo and mens water polo in particular) the relaxation of geographic protection or the waiving of host country automatic quota place might be considered. In this way we would see more even or closer matches. In water polo the group stage should be reworked completely. It made no sense in its current form (particularly in women's tournament where everyone made it to the knockout stage), and as the rank after group stage decided which opponent they face in rd 1 of the knockout stage, there was ample possibility of "tactical defeats" in order to get an opponent they would like (as it actually happened in men's tournament) The place of water polo is not the safest one in the Olympic program, so to say, and it cannot afford "own goals" like this
  21. Also in team sports, there might be some who "retired" from their respective national teams but did not quit competitive sport. This is the case for example for the aforementioned Gabor Kis of Hungary in water polo (he will not play any more for the national team but continue playing for his club)
  22. I really believed in the 3 womens gold for . And they did it! hckosice: I think many in Hungary have mixed feelings about Rio. (I mean the whole not only canoe kayak) On one hand, amazing performance from the 2 three-time champions (Kozak and Hosszu) and the fencing team (2 G 1 S 1 B), some positive surprises like the young swimmer Kenderesi (winning bronze medal in his first olympics after beating Phelps in the heats and semifinal) or the shot putter Anita Marton (first womens medal in athletics since 1968) On the other hand: - handball team did not qualify (neither W nor M) - HUN swim team was about 35 strong, and many strong names who very expected to have a good performance (at least IV-V-VI place) did not even make it to the final, along them 2012 champion Daniel Gyurta - Disappointing performance of the judo team (along with some referee "mis-judgement") - Disappointing performance of the wrestling team (along with open _cheating_ by one of the referee's on a HU bronze match) - Disappointing performance of the mens waterpolo team (for the second olympics V/VI place) - Disappointing performance of the mens canoe-kayak team (see above) + this is not directly sports related: absolutely sub-par commentators on Hungarian public TV covering the OG, with exception of athletics and fencing and a few other disciplines. The guy who covered canoe-kayak sometimes had no clue about what is happening on the track... But I personally would like congratulate to all Hungarian athletes who had a good performance at Rio, no matter what place or medal or whatever!
  23. According to some stats from today, the last time the flag-bearer of Team HUN won a gold medal was in 1948! After 68 YEARS Aron Szilagyi did it again!!!!
  24. Same for me, even during the ECh and Wch I supported her, also because she is from the Baltics (I like the Baltic states). But even more now, considering the situation with her opponent... So go Hungary! Go Lithuania! :))
  25. Wohooo! She did it! This will be a great story, as this was the 169th gold medal of HUN, and Katinka Hosszu (in swimming) is on track to win the 170th !!!
