With regard to the 1984 boycott, a few weeks ago I read an article in the local sport press written by an old sport commentator from Hungary about the HU women's basketball team who found out about the boycott just when they defeated Yugoslavia on a Qual tournament in Havanna, Cuba and thereby qualified for the Olympics...

@hckosice: Hopefully the border restrictions will be eased for the summer and I can visit your city :D Last time I was there around 2005, but want to return. This summer only a few countries will be safe to travel to, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic among them. In other news, since 1 May Hungary started to admit again business travellers from Cz. R., Sl. R, Germany, Austria, Poland and S Korea without mandatory quarantine

Sport Events Cancelled due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Not that so many people would care, but LEN yesterday cancelled all the suspended European water polo international club competitions in the season 2019/2020 https://total-waterpolo.com/all-len-european-water-polo-cups-for-season-2019-20-are-canceled/ -

Loving the "retro" coverage of Hungarian sports channels so far. The sports channel of public TV goes on with the old Olympics every evening, not only Hungarian but international highlights, e.g. they have shown the '92 final of the original Dream Team vs. Croatia, now this week they are going to show Sidney 2000. Right now, other sports TV is broadcasting the highest scoring match from NBA history, Detroit Pistons v. Denver Nuggets in 1983 (186-184!) -
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/24/politics/donald-trump-coronavirus-disinfectant-sunlight-science/index.html But Trump, who appeared fascinated by the possibilities, posed a question of entirely different magnitude: "Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light ... supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do, either through the skin or in some other way?" Trump asked, possibly thinking of an analogy to radiation treatment, which can be used to treat cancers. Then the President pondered another idea: "I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute. "Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs, and it does a tremendous number on the lungs?" Please tell me this is not true (but I am afraid it is.... )

Starting Monday, Hungary's M4 Sport TV is re-broadcasting highlights of past olympics from a Hungarian perspective (medal races/finals/etc.) starting from Barcelona '92, for about 3-4 hours per day. Its funny to hear again all those old commentators (many of them no longer alive) and there were moments I now remember personally having seen back then on TV (from BCN ' 92) even though I was only age 11/12 that time -
As I understand the mobility restrictions are not as severe in CZ and SK as in Spain. I have a class mate who now lives in Barcelona with her ~4 month old son. It is not possible to take the children to the street, and indeed there were complaints because of that rule. Now the Spanish gov is planning to allow it from 27 April. On the other hand given the situation Spain is in (epidemic wise) maybe the ultra strictness is understandable somewhat.

Of course, police/military being violent, beating up people is a different thing. I am not aware of that happening here. You are also right that there is a difference between a temporary and measured limitation of personal rights in the interest of the society (but here there might be a difference between Europe and the US on what degree of limitation people are willing to tolerate) and the intentions of some irresponsible politicians of using the crisis as a pretext to establish some kind of authoritarian model of governance. One finance/investment professional here in HU dubbed this the prospect of "palpatinization", from the efforts of Senator Palpatine in Star Wars to establish a dictatorship using a crisis as a pretext (I am not a big SW watcher so I have to accept this at face value )

Seems good to me. A video emerged today from last weekend at Velence lake (a popular weekend spot about 50 Kms from Budapest) with the parking lot being full, people congregating, not respecting the distance etc. When the police dispersed them some people came back 20 mins after the police left Hopefully something more strict will be done for Easter weekend here as well, b/c I fear this can be like the weekend of 7-8 March was for Spain... On the use of the military: dont know how it is done is the Slovak Republic, but here the military I saw was specifically trained for military police duties, not simply any soldiers. There are no tanks or APCs on the streets!

How it is decided in the Netherlands whether or not some one falls in this category? Is there a list of conditions?

As I said to some one a few days ago, Italy and the EU is like two persons sitting atop of a big pile of high explosive, where both persons hold a cigarette lighter in their hands and threaten the other with finally using the lighter. As both are going to explode no matter which lights up the lighter, the better course of action is maybe doing something else This is going to be very hard to resolve yes, but in the end both parties are interested in not to escalate this. The collapse of the €-zone is going to hurt everyone in Europe (not only those who use the €), and the disruption caused by that would make the current crisis pale in comparison, so it is common interest for everyone to work to avoid that. Short term electoral politics is going to influence all this, sadly (There are elections in GER next year, i think also in NED, there can by an election any time in ITA), which will affect the leader's ability and willingness to compromise. But compromise will have to be made by both sides.

Budapest has something like this - at least I saw it at the tram stop two weeks ago (when I last took the tram :D )

There is something I do not understand: Croatia (168 cases according to worldometer) from tomorrow shuts down intercity public transport, Serbia (148 cases) did it already + nightly curfew enforced by their army Italy in recent restriction prohibited visiting public parks and playgrounds . Surprised really that it did not so already (here the playground in the corner of the street I live in is cordoned off since Monday this week, and we had about ~110 cases). Why there are not even more stringent controls in Italy? Does it have to do with the division of competences between the central government and the regional government?

Sport Events Cancelled due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Today I noticed that FIL did not (yet) remove the 2019/20 season's videos from video.fil-luge.org (as they used to do when the season ends). So I'll catch up on what I missed from the last races Plus, maybe catching up on ski jumping on Eurosport Player (missed a lot of it from the past weeks, LOL) -

I assume it will. Those who qualified already will hold on to their spots, and the play-offs for remaining 4 (?) spots, due late March, will be held later on. -
I agree with the postponement. Even if the epidemic peaked by June (hopefully it will), due to still prevailing risks, fear factor, etc. the attendance figures would be down massively in every host country/city. One of the argument in favor of hosting the Euros was that it is going to benefit tourism. Personally I would not want to see sparsely attended matches (like Qatar athletic Wch) in the brand new super-expensive stadium, even if (a big if) the conditions would allow the competition to be held in the original dates.Plus, the new dates would also allow fans in the Covid-19 risk groups to attend as well (I assume that even if the worst is over, those people who are in the risk groups will still have to be super vigilant) So, look forward to Euro 2021 and hope that we will live to see it

Men's Water Polo Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
pdr4332 replied to vlad's topic in Water Polo
Well I think we should shut up, as the same criteria with the women would benefit Hungary We should see how this Covid-2019 thing will go, but using the 2019 WCh ranking is maybe fairer than a OQT organized amid the whole Covid-19 chaos, with teams who dont know for the moment when or if the OQT is going to be held, etc. etc. And all this rests on the assumption that there will be Olympics at some point of this year... -

Well I am not so much well versed in the ice hockey world, but as for the law suit, EBEL and DEL is canceled the same way you did - will there be law suits as well? With regards to other sports, it seems now at the short term every event will be either canceled or matches played behind closed doors One of the wonders of Hungarian club football is that there are first league matches with an attendance figure of around 500, so they could go on with open doors, complying with the new rules Probably the bigger head-ache here for those concerned is the fate of the Giro'd Italia (the state paid a lot of money to organize the Grande partenza) and the Euro 2020 -

Would be interesting to see what Hungary will do. It is reported that the HU Gov is now deliberating about, among others, limiting or suspending sport events and the decision will be published in the coming hours. It is said that indoor events with more than 100 spectators cannot go ahead - this means koniec for handball for example (either continue it without spectators or cancel it altogether like you did with hockey) - probaly the most watched indoor sport in Hungary. Curious as to what happens with football - not so much for the spectators, as a lot a matches have -in football terms- very few spectators anyway :D -

Women’s Olympic qualification tournament in Trieste in May The women’s Olympic qualification tournament for the Olympic Games will be held in Trieste in May, announced Hungarian Water Polo Federation. The Hungarian Federation announced in the statement published on the official website, that FINA decided to reschedule the tournament. Still, the host will be Trieste, as it was decided a long time ago. The tournament had been scheduled for March (8th-15th), but it was canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak in Italy. According to the Hungarian national federation, the new dates for the tournament are 17th – 24th May, but FINA will review the situation about coronavirus in April. If Italy remains in danger, the host will be changed. https://total-waterpolo.com/womens-olympic-qualification-tournament-in-trieste-in-may/ -
